However, a fourth EVA \u2013 on Flight Day 9 or 10, is being discussed.<br \/>\n<em><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"129\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=13910\" width=\"600\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**Over 2100mb of STS-116 onwards&nbsp;related presentions and mission documentation&nbsp;<\/em><em>available on L2<\/em><em>&nbsp;**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**LIVE news updates on Discovery&nbsp;STS-116 \u2013 FOR EACH FLIGHT DAY**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The retraction event began at 12:28pm Central Time, but suffered folding and creasing during the withdrawal between the 19 bay point \u2013 more so up to the 17.5 bay point \u2013 which is about half of the full retraction length.<\/p>\n<p>As stated by today\u2019s On Orbit status report, the current length of retraction is acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A minimum of 40 percent&nbsp;of the array (~12.6 bays) must be retracted to provide enough clearance for activation of the P4 SARJ (Solar Alpha Rotary Joint) tested during STS-115.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>\u2018It will be redeployed after the P6 truss is relocated to the end of the P5 truss during 10A in 2007.&nbsp; The P6 starboard array will be retracted during 13A.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"250\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/75.126.85.10\/xmas.gif\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" width=\"270\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The P6 arrays \u2013 a set of two panels on either side \u2013 were suffering from a lack of required tension on one of the controlling wires, while folding problems could be observed during retraction. <\/p>\n<p>The arrays have never previously been retracted, since arriving at the International Space Station in December 2000, on board Endeavour during STS-97.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Meanwhile, SARJ activation was completed for the newly arrived P4 arrays to&nbsp;begin solar tracking \u2013 which&nbsp;began&nbsp;at orbital noon, as controllers note their wish to continue with the Flight Day 5 timeline.<\/p>\n<p>The new arrays, taken into orbit in September on mission STS-115, are stationed on the complex\u2019s P4 truss segment. Those arrays need to rotate to track the sun and provide power to the orbiting outpost. <\/p>\n<p>Contingency procedures will be utilized in the coming days to fully retract the solar array wing into its blanket box. <\/p>\n<p>The most viable option is to fix the wing during a spacewalk, or EVA, which was intimated at by&nbsp;ground controllers, opening up the possibility of an EVA 4 on STS-116.&nbsp;The last resort NASA has pre-planned is a jettison of the array, as an absolute worst case senario, and very unlikely.<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p>\u2018We sent some guys off to look at EVA options after EVA 3,\u2019 said Kirk Shireman, deputy ISS manager, noting a spacewalk would allow some solutions to issues where only a helpful \u2018poke\u2019 would aid the retraction. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The hard part is that you look at the arrays and think \u2018if you could touch it right there\u2019 it would retract.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, NASA managers have to discuss the hazards involved with sending spacewalkers out to the array, to ensure any work on the panels can be carried out safely. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have experts looking at the rules for when you send a spacewalker out there and touching the array with a tool,\u2019 added Shireman. \u2018These panels have glass in them and a charge \u2013 so there\u2019s a shock hazard. We\u2019re looking at ways where we can free the tension.
