Other associated L2 resources listed at the end of this article.<\/p>\n<p>**ARES I \/ ORION LIVE UPDATE PAGES**<\/p>\n<p>**ARES V \/ Mars Transport Vehicle (MTV) LIVE UPDATE PAGES**<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The process will likely take around a year before the winning vendor is awarded the deal, although that is well within the new timelines Constellation now have to work under, following the decision to halt any work on Pad 39B until 2008, given its requirement to host a LON (Launch On Need) Shuttle flight, in support of STS-125\u2019s mission to re-service Hubble.<\/p>\n<p>Despite continued talk of serious issues relating to the development of the Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle, work is still pressing ahead at a pace, in order to have the required infrastructure in place for the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>In relation to the Ares I-1 test flight, a meeting will take place next week at Constellation KSC (Kennedy Space Center) to discuss the best way forward with pad infrastructure impacts from last week\u2019s announcement of the Hubble servicing mission, with LON support.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Minotaur<br \/><\/u><\/em><br \/>In other news, Orbital Sciences Corporation\u2019s Minotaur rocket will be in use at White Sands for Ares I testing of the LAS (Launch Abort System). Unlike the Little Joe tests ahead of the Apollo era, it will be used to test the tower \u2013 as opposed the capsule.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Previous Trade Study \u2013 taken from our September exclusive on the trade study<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><font size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"125\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=9361\" width=\"125\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><\/em>Back to the decision to move forward with the Rollercoaster system, the winner design did have competition from a number of other concepts during the trade study.<\/p>\n<p>During the trade study, detailed analysis was performed on the following system elements: Ingress\/egress routes for Pad flight and Ground Support Equipment (GSE) configurations. Operational tasks with associated manloading. Operations hazard levels and flight\/closeout\/contingency ground crew personnel emergency egress route criteria.<\/font><\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Previous studies for Shuttle and Apollo were used as guidelines, such as the Shuttle\u2019s slidewire baskets to a bunker away from the pad, and Apollo\u2019s high speed elevators to a blast room.<\/p>\n<p>In total, four major concepts were put forward as Ares&nbsp;EES candidates: 1) Four to six separate four-man cab slide-wire systems to the safety bunker from the Fixed Service Structure (FSS) or Mobile Launcher (ML) tower. 2) Four separate four-to-six man car rail (rollercoaster) systems to the safety bunker from FSS or ML tower. 3) Elevator system to Pad Terminal Connection Room (PTCR) to blast room from FSS or ML tower. 4) Slide-tube system to safety bunker from FSS or ML tower. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The study defined the options as follows: <\/p>\n<p><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><em><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"165\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=13431\" width=\"98\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">Slide-wire System:<br \/><\/u><\/em><br \/>\u2018A slide-wire system will be used from the crew access arm level of the ML tower or FSS to a bunker located on the west side of the pad. One basket will be attached to each slide wire and have a four person capacity.<font color=\"#c0c0c0\"> <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">\u2018This system will be start from the crew access arm level of the ML tower or FSS and terminate at a bunker located on the west side of the pad just outside of the perimeter fence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Rail Car (Rollercoaster) System:<\/u><\/em><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"183\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=13430\" width=\"207\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018An unpowered fixed single-rail system from the access arm level of the ML tower to the existing bunker would be used. The railcars could be enclosed to provide personnel protection. Each railcar can hold four to six people.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018The rail would follow the ML tower vertically down to the pad surface, then turn and continue close to the ground to the safety bunker. A passive magnetic and friction braking system will decelerate the cars at the track\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s end as well as prevent the cars from hitting each other.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><u><em><br \/>High Speed Elevator Alternative:<\/em><\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The egress route would be across the access arm, down the high-speed elevators, into the slide tube, and then into the existing blast room beneath the pad.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Slidetude System:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018A fixed slide tube made of either metal or hard plastic\/fiberglass will extend from the access arm level of the ML tower or FSS to the existing bunker located on the west side of the pad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"147\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=13432\" width=\"157\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018The egress route will be across the access arm to the slide tube, down the slide tube to the bunker, and into the bunker. Each person would enter the tube one at a time from the crew access level on the tower and slide the distance to the bunker.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The study listed its recommendations for the best EES option as the Rollercoaster\/Rail Car system, despite it being the most expensive system \u2013 ranking it both first and second (from the RSS and the ML Tower), beating out the Slidewire, Elevators and Slidetube systems.<\/p>\n<p>Further fine tuning and modifications to the designs are expected, with the Rollercoaster cars likely to be semi \u2013 or fully \u2013 enclosed, to protect escaping crew and\/or workers from being sent into the path of an event, such as a hypergolic leak \u2013 which would be a serious issue if they weren\u2019t enclosed in the cars.<\/p>\n<p>Also relevant to the final design will be the call for a \u2018clean pad\u2019 \u2013 which would have impacts on such EES concepts.<\/p>\n<p>The schedule calls for the fabrication of the design to start at the start of 2008 (pending Hubble LON flight target launch date requirement), ready for installation into the pad in 2009.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">Other L2 Resources For Ares I, V and Constellation: Ares I-1 Test Flight Plan (full outline) Presentation.
