{"id":41971,"date":"2006-08-19T21:26:26","date_gmt":"2006-08-19T13:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/new-nasa-footage-of-cev\/"},"modified":"2006-08-19T21:26:26","modified_gmt":"2006-08-19T13:26:26","slug":"new-nasa-footage-of-cev","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/new-nasa-footage-of-cev\/","title":{"rendered":"New NASA footage of CEV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With less than two weeks to go before NASA awards the CEV (Crew Exploration Vehicle) contract to either Lockheed Martin or Northrop Grumman\/Boeing, CEV Project Manager Skip Hatfield has given a full review of the current status on the design phase of the vehicle.  <\/p>\n<p>  An 85 minute address to Constellation workers at their recent \u201cAll Hands\u201d meeting, included new video of the interior and exterior of the crew module, including fascinating test and simulation footage.<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"129\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=9981\" width=\"600\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/p>\n<p><em><font color=\"#ff0000\">**Full 135mb (85 mins) video available on L2 \u2013 not the 10 minutes MSFC video**<\/p>\n<p><\/font>**Selected screenshots of the Hatfield presentation section available here**<br \/><\/em><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10687\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">The awarding of the CEV contract will be made on August 31 \u2013 according to NASA memos \u2013 to the winning contractor,&nbsp;and announced to the public the same day.<\/p>\n<p>While sources have continued to note serious issues with the Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV) \u2013 with an additional TIM meeting taking place at the Kennedy Space Center next week, dedicated to the CLV \u2013 the CEV has been going to plan throughout its design stages \u2013 now currently passing through DAC-2. <em>(DAC-2 CEV Presentation available on L2 \u2013 **related article available here**).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The current work being carried out on the CEV is to ensure a blueprint of requirements and parameters can be given&nbsp;as guidelines for&nbsp;contractor to work alongside NASA in bringing the CEV to life, ahead of a 2012-2014 debut manned mission to the International Space Station (ISS).<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10691\" width=\"120\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018One of the big activities we\u2019ve had going on is the run down to the final days of the contractor selection,\u2019 said Hatfield. \u2018The first destination for CEV is to the International Space Station \u2013 and we have a mock up for interior layout, built in Building 9 next to the current Space Station models.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">New video and images show the work on the inside of the CEV, which will compromise of state-of-the-art computer displays and software.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10692\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018In parallel with the interior design, we\u2019re also doing a lot of work with the cockpit design,\u2019 added Hatfield. \u2018We\u2019ve a NASA led team that is heavily involved with working on the development of the windows. The facilities we have here at JSC are seeing the mock up of those windows \u2013 and being able to simulate the outer window views. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018In addition to that, we\u2019re also working on the conceptual cockpit instrument panel layout. We\u2019re very rapidly turning these things around here.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hatfield himself joined the Constellation program from the role of ISS Program Integration Office Chief. Engineers have been testing simulations of the CEV landing on both land and sea.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10694\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018We have a number of landing tests that we\u2019re doing, including simulations of the CEV landing in water,\u2019 added Hatfield. \u2018We also carry out drop tests of various configurations, which plough up lots of dirt up at Langley (Flight Research Center \u2013 LaRC) as we do various impacts for straight down, as well as angular impacts. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10695\" width=\"120\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018One of the neat things that happened during the testing was that we were able to do some testing on the flora and fauna requirements,\u2019 as the video showed super high resolution photography of a CEV heat shield landing on the ground at LaRC, even capturing a dragonfly getting out of the way at the very last second. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We missed him unfortunately, so we weren\u2019t able to verify any requirements,\u2019 joked Hatfield. \u2018But it is fascinating to see how close this is working here.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Testing and evaluations are continuing to be carried out on what will become the heat shield for the CEV, with materials that will make up the crew\u2019s barrier from the intense heat of re-entry \u2013&nbsp;plus computational analysis \u2013&nbsp;being put through the rigours of NASA\u2019s super computers.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"125\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=9361\" width=\"125\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font>\u2018A lot of the other tests that we\u2019re doing for the Thermal Protection System (TPS) involve work at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) and out at Ames Research Center (ARC),\u2019 continued Hatfield. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re testing a number of materials that can be used in the heat shields. We\u2019re doing these tests as risk reduction elements ahead of bringing the contractor on board, so this has been helping us a great deal. <\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10696\" width=\"120\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018A mock up at the Langley Research Center of the Launch Abort System has seen a lot of analytical work with the super computers and other analytical techniques to look at the computational flows involved with abort cases and entry cases.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As part of the evaluations, NASA is also using wind tunnel testing on scaled models of the vehicle, and also \u2013 surprisingly \u2013 firing models out of cannons, to show data on the launch abort system.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10699\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018One of the cool tests that we\u2019re doing \u2013 and being an ex-Army guy I can always get into these kinda things \u2013 is we\u2019re actually firing scale models of the CEV out of cannons, which can help validate a lot of our computational codes. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018That work is then used as part of the computational work, and then we\u2019re doing a lot of work in our wind tunnels with the entry cases as well as the ascent cases. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018There have been a series of very sophisticated models created for this work, filled with instrumentation and equipment to help to run these tests, so that we can simulate various angles of attack for entry and various flying characteristics as we\u2019re heading toward the ground. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10701\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018Fresh from that, we\u2019re able to get flow visualisations of what the aerodynamic flow is off the vehicle.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Throughout the video, which includes updates on all the elements of the Ares I-1 test vehicle, Ares 1 CLV and CEV, and even CaLV (Cargo Launch Vehicle), full scale fabricated parts can be seen, giving an idea of real life scale, which Hatfield was keen to note.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment-thumbnail.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=10702\" width=\"120\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018Another mock up, up at the Glenn Research Center, is off the Service Module (SM) \u2013 this one is for the 5.5 meter diameter vehicle, so it\u2019s a little bit bigger than what the real one will be, but it gives you an idea of the scale of this hardware that we\u2019re going to be producing for this program. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018It really is quite large.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"60\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=7015\" width=\"468\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>**NASASpaceflight.com Job Opportunities**<\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>&nbsp;<br \/><\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"60\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lduhtrp.net\/image-1911168-10415279\" width=\"120\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"60\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"10\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/image-1911168-10419894\" width=\"120\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"10\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/font><br \/><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>&nbsp;
