It has been causing you lots of headaches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: We do plan on actually installing a much larger state-of-the-art LOX plant for Falcon 9 sometimes next year, but we\u2019re not planning on upgrading our little LOX plant on Kwajalein right now.&nbsp; It is a bit of a clunker.&nbsp; It is fine for use in emergency situations, but it\u2019s not really capable of continuous LOX production without a lot of care and feeding.<\/p>\n<p>So we are actually going to transfer our LOX from Hawaii, and we acquired some additional LOX storage containers so that we have additional launch liquid oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>We are looking forward to a heavy duty seven and a half ton per day LOX plant; a 2006 model type thing, which we will install probably next year.<\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: Omelek would seem like it would need more infrastructure to handle the Falcon 9.&nbsp; Do you need to add a new dock?&nbsp; We need to put in a much bigger hanger.&nbsp; Increase the amount of fuel, LOX, and pressurant that is stored on the island.&nbsp; But there\u2019s no major upgrades required; we don\u2019t need a new dock or anything like that.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve already done the layout of Falcon 9 on Omelek.&nbsp; There is sort of a peninsula on the island; it will be part of the peninsula, and it actually works out pretty well.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going through the final preparations for submitting our environmental approval for Falcon 9, and we\u2019ll probably submit those in the next month or so.&nbsp; Credit: SpaceX<\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: How have things been progressing on the Falcon 9, and when could we expect a test firing?&nbsp; I understand towards the end of this year, from your last update.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: Yes, if not at the end of this year, then very early next.&nbsp; We expect to have everything on the Falcon 9 first stage except the engines done in about three months.&nbsp; The first stage is the far more challenging stage of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Everything except the engines should be done in about three months. We have five of the nine engines that are ready to go, and then another four which are in a production cycle.<\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: Are these the Merlin 1B with the better turbo-pump, or are these the 1A engines?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: There are three versions of Merlin.&nbsp; The Merlin 1A is the basic Merlin which is on the Falcon 1, with the ablative chamber, and that is about a 72,000 lb sea-level thrust engine.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the Merlin 1B, which is upgraded in thrust, and upgraded turbopump, upgraded main valve \u2013 a number of improvements all around \u2013 but still an ablative chamber.&nbsp; That\u2019s actually not something that is going to fly.&nbsp; That is an interim engine.&nbsp; In fact we may or may not fire those engines, depending upon the progress of the Merlin 1C.<\/p>\n<p>So the Merlin 1C is the engine that is headed for Falcon 9, and it is a fully regen engine.&nbsp; So it has a copper milled copper chamber attached to a brazed tube wall nozzle chamber.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Merlin 1C - VTS1-323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pnQESl6ouT8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In fact it is similar to the way in which the Space Shuttle main engine is done.&nbsp; That\u2019s actually the highest heat capacity, lowest weight architecture you can do.<\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: Has either 1B or 1C been test fired? I guess 1C is still in late design stage at this point?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: Actually, 1C is past design, it\u2019s actually in fabrication right now. We expect to have the 1C thrust chamber on the test stand in about\u2026 let\u2019s see\u2026 I\u2019d say about 7 or 8 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t really consider the 1B to be a very significant technology difference to the 1A, because it still is an ablative chamber.&nbsp; It is more thrust (etc.) But they are relatively minor changes.<\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: So the Falcon 9 first stage firing that will happen late this year or early next \u2013 that will be full 1C at this point, or it\u2019s looking like 1B?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: It\u2019s TBD.&nbsp; It depends on how well initial tests go with 1C.&nbsp; If it looks like we\u2019re going to need a lot of time on 1C development, then we\u2019re going to the multi-engine firings initially with 1B \u2013 just to test the multi-engine configuration, see if there are any coupling issues between the engines, and just work the bugs out of the whole multi-engine configuration.&nbsp; We don\u2019t want to hold up stage development for the engine development.<\/p>\n<p>If it looks like 1C \u2013 if we nail it pretty soon after putting it on the test pad \u2013 then we will run it with 1C instead of 1B when we want to do the Falcon 9 initial test.<\/p>\n<p>But either way the 1Cs will be on the Falcon 9 first stage by probably the end of the first quarter of next year, at the latest.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Falcon 9 Nine Engine Test\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/95-bpIko-jw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid1\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>NASASpaceflight.com: And then Falcon 9 is still slated to run sometime next year \u2013 actually fly?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk: You know, I\u2019ve given some thought to how to communicate launch schedules, because whenever you do development, it\u2019s very difficult to predict what\u2019s going to go wrong, that is to say that almost certainly, something will go wrong.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, what I\u2019ve put forward is kind of a nominal schedule; basically if things go right this is what date this will launch.&nbsp; But that\u2019s not really a good indicator of when it\u2019s gonna launch, because things never go entirely right.<\/p>\n<p>We are aiming for the first half of 2008 as a launch window, and I think that is probably a reasonably good guess.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, we\u2019re going to aim to have everything associated with Falcon 9 done in 2007.&nbsp; But again because of the uncertainty associated with development, I can bet you \u2013 it is a pretty safe bet \u2013 that we will encounter issues that we\u2019ll need to resolve that will push out that time-frame into 2008.<\/p>\n<p><em>**NASASpaceflight.com Job Opportunities**<br \/>\n<\/em><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lduhtrp.net\/image-1911168-10415279\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"60\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\"><\/em><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/image-1911168-10419894\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"60\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"10\"><\/em><br \/>\n<em>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><em>LIVE&nbsp;UPDATE PAGES<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elon Musk, CEO of The Space Exploration Company \u2013 commonly known as SpaceX \u2013 has spoken about the improvements necessary at his Pacific island launch site in the US Army\u2019s Kwajalein test range to support the Falcon 9, progress on the vehicle\u2019s development, and work on the next generation of Merlin 1 engines.
