They provide over 70 percent of the thrust required to lift the Shuttle off the launch pad. <\/p>\n<p>They fire for two minutes, before seperating at an altitude of 28 statute miles.<!--StartFragment --> Each booster has a thrust (sea level) of approximately 3,300,000 pounds at launch.<\/p>\n<p>The footage shows the first stage ascent, with the darkness of space \u2013&nbsp;and even the curvature of the Earth in view \u2013 visable,&nbsp;as&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;sent the<!--StartFragment --><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;ordnance firing command&nbsp;in&nbsp;the<!--StartFragment -->&nbsp;separation sequence to initiate the redundant NSD pressure cartridge in each bolt and ignite and&nbsp;effect a clean separation.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment -->The recovery sequence begins with the operation of the high-altitude baroswitch, which triggers the functioning of the pyrotechnic nose cap thrusters. This ejects the nose cap, which deploys the pilot parachute. This occurs at 15,704 feet altitude 225 seconds after separation. <\/p>\n<p>The 11.5-foot-diameter conical ribbon pilot parachute provides the force to pull the lanyard activating the zero-second cutter, which cuts the loop securing the drogue retention straps.<\/p>\n<p>After splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean, they are recovered, towed back to mainland, ready to be refurbished and reused on later missions.<br \/><\/font><br \/><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>**FREE VIDEOS**<\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<\/em>Docking, Hatch Opening.
