{"id":42012,"date":"2006-07-07T19:46:02","date_gmt":"2006-07-07T11:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/space-x-investigation-heading-for-closure\/"},"modified":"2006-07-07T19:46:02","modified_gmt":"2006-07-07T11:46:02","slug":"space-x-investigation-heading-for-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/space-x-investigation-heading-for-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"Space X \u2013 investigation heading for closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The official US Government joint investigation into the Falcon 1 launch failure in March will be completed in approximately two weeks, SpaceX reports.<\/p>\n<p>The findings of the \u201cDARPA\/SpaceX Return to Flight Board\u201d will be made public after the senior DARPA leadership has been briefed, stated Elon Musk yesterday in his first official update since just after the crash.<br \/>\nThe ongoing investigation has prevented SpaceX from releasing details about the failure, resulting in relative silence from the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are just unable to discuss the issue in any detail until our gov\u2019t customer for that first flight completes their review,\u2019 a company official told <em>NASASpaceFlight.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At an ISDC presentation in May, Musk had stated that the fuel leak that led to an engine fire during the launch had been caused by an \u2018on-pad processing error on the part of a couple of technicians on the day before the launch\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Space.com<\/em> reported \u2013 via sources \u2013&nbsp;that a pad technician had been working on the vehicle\u2019s avionics and had loosened but failed to re-tighten a tiny fuel pipe fitting.<\/p>\n<p><em>For more information on the Falcon 1 failure, read \u2018SpaceX: Come Hell or High Water\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018No major surprises were uncovered in the course of the investigation\u2019, stated Mr. Musk yesterday, which would seem to indicate that the previous revelations about a procedural error were correct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next Falcon 1 launch attempt, under a new agreement with DARPA and the Air Force, is planned by the end of this year from Kwajalein.&nbsp; The new attempt will be a pure flight test and only carry an instrumented dummy payload instead of a functional satellite.<\/p>\n<p>With the conclusion of the investigation, Musk promised to reveal many changes in design and procedure that are being incorporated into what he dubbed \u2018Falcon 1.1\u2019.&nbsp; While controllers didn\u2019t catch the problem before liftoff, \u2018If we had been looking at the right data stream at the right time we would have caught it,\u2019 he stated at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Musk also noted yesterday that tremendous progress has been made on the large Falcon 9 vehicle, with a stage hold down multi-engine test firing expected in about six months.&nbsp;
