{"id":42073,"date":"2006-05-09T01:37:54","date_gmt":"2006-05-08T17:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/air-force-lockheed-plot-new-launch-vehicle\/"},"modified":"2006-05-09T01:37:54","modified_gmt":"2006-05-08T17:37:54","slug":"air-force-lockheed-plot-new-launch-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/air-force-lockheed-plot-new-launch-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force\/Lockheed plot new launch vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off the US Air Force announcement of the SIV Space Test Program\u2019s \u201cStandard Interface Vehicle\u201d (STP-SIV), Lockheed Martin have revealed they have won an initial contract for the Hybrid Launch Vehicle (HLV) Studies and Analysis program.  <\/p>\n<p>  The HLV announcement, which will ring bells with those that followed the early days of the X-33, notes \u201d the HLV will provide the Air Force with an affordable, responsive, reliable and simple-to-operate capability for launching tactical space assets and conventional satellites into low earth orbit (LEO).\u201d<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font color=\"#ff0000\"><font face=\"Arial\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"90\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/logo2_1bk.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" width=\"182\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/em><\/font><\/font>While the HLV won\u2019t be an SSTO (Single Stage to Orbit) craft, the Air Force \u2013 who nearly adopted the stalled \u2018VentureStar\u2019 program from Lockheed Martin and NASA, have a lot of the X-33\u2019s operational capabilities targeted for the HLV. <\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">The vehicle will be highly responsive, with an anticipated 24- to 48-hour turnaround time. Air Force requirements call for a HLV that will accommodate medium to heavy lift (10,000 to 15,000 pounds) for LEO inclinations.<\/font><font face=\"Arial\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Lockheed Martin will formulate conceptual designs for an operational system architecture, a subscale demonstrator and associated ground hardware and infrastructure for an HLV that employs a reusable first-stage booster and an expendable upper stage.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"125\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/image-1911168-10418554\" width=\"125\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\">\u2018Our expertise in reusable launch vehicles positions us to formulate a system design concept that will completely meet the Air Force\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s needs for a highly operable vehicle that also is extremely reliable,\u2019 said Dave Kennon, Hybrid Launch Vehicle program manager, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Under our concept, the HLV will take off vertically and the reusable first stage will return to the launch site for a horizontal landing.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The vehicle will adopt a vertical launch approach, with a reusable booster first stage, expendable upper stages, which the deployment stage returning to Earth for a horizontal landing, ready for re-use.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">  <\/p>\n<p><em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"90\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/AdBanners\/storelogo3.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" width=\"182\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><\/font><\/em><\/p>\n<p>  <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Some of the contractors who took part in the failed X-33 project are being brought in on the HLV vision, with Lockheed using subcontractors Aerojet of Sacramento, Calif., and Pratt &amp; Whitney Rocketdyne of Canoga Park, Calif., for the reusable propulsion systems.<\/p>\n<p>In an upcoming separate procurement, the Air Force will select two contractor teams to design subscale HLV demonstrators, with work to begin in fiscal year 2007.
