{"id":42080,"date":"2006-04-28T21:37:24","date_gmt":"2006-04-28T13:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/nasa-gives-ramp-rationale\/"},"modified":"2006-04-28T21:37:24","modified_gmt":"2006-04-28T13:37:24","slug":"nasa-gives-ramp-rationale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/nasa-gives-ramp-rationale\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA gives ramp rationale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a press briefing today, NASA gave its reasons for pressing ahead with the expected July launch of Shuttle Discovery on STS-121.  <\/p>\n<p>  Despite concerns raised during yesterday\u2019s PRCB, managers made the decision to go ahead with the second test flight, full in the knowledge that more work will have to continue on reducing foam liberation from the External Tanks.<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"90\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/AdBanners\/storelogo3.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" width=\"182\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/p>\n<p>Following the removal of the PAL ramp from all External Tanks \u2013 starting with ET-119, which will fly with Discovery this summer \u2013 extra work has focused on the ice\/frost ramps, which line the outside of the tanks. <\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Wind Tunnel testing has shown that some liberation will be possible from these ramps, although computations and tests show it is expected to be minimal. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">MSFC (Marshall Space Flight Center) was the more ardent in their recommendation that a delay should be placed on STS-121, while extra evaluations and modifications are made to the ramps, mainly the reduction to the foam surface that make up the individual ramps. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018We reviewed that yesterday, work from hundreds of people, and we reached a conclusion that it was a mixed conclusion,\u2019 noted Shuttle manager Wayne Hale, confirming the split opinion that came out of the PRCB. <em><font face=\"Arial\" color=\"#ff0000\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"90\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/logo2_1bk.jpg\" width=\"182\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018There is further work we\u2019d like to do on the tank. Yesterday we worked on the ice\/frost ramps.\u2019 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">However, the recommendation to carry out further work on the ramps was rejected, as NASA pushes towards the July launch date, an opportunity that stretches from July 1 to 23. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Work still has to be completed, even while Discovery is readied for launch.
