{"id":42110,"date":"2006-03-27T19:57:43","date_gmt":"2006-03-27T11:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/dawn-mission-back-on\/"},"modified":"2006-03-27T19:57:43","modified_gmt":"2006-03-27T11:57:43","slug":"dawn-mission-back-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/dawn-mission-back-on\/","title":{"rendered":"DAWN mission back on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA has officially reinstated the DAWN mission, confirming an earlier report on NASAWatch.com, with the mission being saved from a previous cancellation.  <\/p>\n<p>  The DAWN mission will investigate the properties of two of the largest asteroids in the solar system, orbiting Vesta and Ceres, collecting data that will help evaluations on how the early solar system formed.\n<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"125\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lduhtrp.net\/image-1911168-6300915\" width=\"125\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font>NASA senior management announced&nbsp;the decision, following&nbsp;a&nbsp;cancellation based on \u2018technical problems and cost overruns\u2019. Earlier, a report on <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">NASAWatch report<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;noted the mission was back on.<\/p>\n<p>The mission originally was approved in December 2001 and was set for launch in June 2006. Technical problems and other difficulties delayed the projected launch date to July 2007 and pushed the cost from its original estimate of $373 million to $446 million. <\/p>\n<p>The decision to cancel Dawn was made March 2, 2006, after about $257 million already had been spent. An additional expenditure of about $14 million would have been required to terminate the project.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The celestial bodies, called \u2018protoplanets\u2019, are located between Mars and Jupiter in the extensive asteroid belt.
