{"id":42133,"date":"2006-03-03T00:19:17","date_gmt":"2006-03-02T16:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/atlantis-has-all-eyes-on-sister\/"},"modified":"2006-03-03T00:19:17","modified_gmt":"2006-03-02T16:19:17","slug":"atlantis-has-all-eyes-on-sister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/atlantis-has-all-eyes-on-sister\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlantis has all eyes on Sister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Atlantis\u2019 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) to finally re-start assembly flights won\u2019t just depend on whether her sister, Discovery, has a \u2018clean\u2019 STS-121.  <\/p>\n<p>  While eyes will be on how the modified External Tank (ET) performs during ascent, with the hope that the second test flight since the loss of Columbia will see an elimination of large foam liberation, the mission itself now has the added task of repairing the ISS\u2019 robotic systems, which will ultimately allow Atlantis to re-start assembling the orbiting outpost.<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"90\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/AdBanners\/logo2_1bk.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" width=\"182\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\"><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">  <\/p>\n<p>Discovery is currently set to launch on STS-121 within a window of May 10, through May 23, paving the way for another 16 flights, 15 of which will be to the ISS, one to service the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Atlantis was set to follow in July on STS-115, but that mission date has been pushed back to the end of August. She will, however,&nbsp;be on standby to rescue the crew of Discovery, should a major problem occur during the eight and a half minute&nbsp;ride uphill.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">While Discovery\u2019s mission will test the new ET, and re-supply the ISS with the multi-purpose logistics module (MPLM) Leonardo, Shuttle manager Wayne Hale explained the new element of STS-121\u2019s goals.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018(STS-121) has changed in a profound way,\u2019 he noted. \u2018This was going to be our second test flight and a logistics and re-supply mission for the ISS. Because of the failure of the trailing umbilical system (TUS), they (the ISS) are frankly crippled in their robotic operations today.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The TUS is a system that involves cables between the Mobile Transporter, Mobile Base System and a movable platform that allows the station\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s robotic arm to move back and forth along the truss during construction and maintenance work.
