{"id":42166,"date":"2006-01-30T20:24:28","date_gmt":"2006-01-30T12:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/lockheed-cev-win-vital-for-maf\/"},"modified":"2006-01-30T20:24:28","modified_gmt":"2006-01-30T12:24:28","slug":"lockheed-cev-win-vital-for-maf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/lockheed-cev-win-vital-for-maf\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed CEV win vital for MAF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Directors at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) believe a successful Lockheed Martin Phase II bid for the development and construction of the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) would guarantee MAF involvement in the project until at least 2019.  <\/p>\n<p>  Competing Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman-Boeing teams received Phase I contract awards last July for CEV systems requirements definition, with Phase II proposals due on March 20, for a decision to be taken by NASA later in the year.\n<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">This month, NASA issued Phase II of a Request for Proposals \u2013 a \u2018Call for Improvements\u2019 that adds detailed design, development and production requirements. Lockheed originally proposed a lifting body CEV, which was rejected by NASA \u2013 opting for the \u2018Apollo-style\u2019 capsule concept. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The spacecraft will have an improved, blunt-body crew capsule shape and be able to transport up to six astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS) and up to four to and from the moon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Requirements are based on future exploration mission needs and the desire to fly the first CEV mission as close as possible to 2010, when the Space Shuttle will be retired.
