{"id":42192,"date":"2006-01-02T20:33:44","date_gmt":"2006-01-02T12:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/were-serious-about-the-moon-hanley\/"},"modified":"2006-01-02T20:33:44","modified_gmt":"2006-01-02T12:33:44","slug":"were-serious-about-the-moon-hanley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/were-serious-about-the-moon-hanley\/","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019re serious about the Moon \u2013 Hanley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Hanley \u2013 manager of NASA\u2019s new Constellation Program \u2013 believes the new mission to return to the Moon is far more \u2018serious\u2019 than the Apollo program, from which a large amount of experience and hardware design has been incorporated from previous NASA manned space flight transportation.\n<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The CEV (Crew Exploration Vehicle) is the centrepiece of NASA\u2019s new direction, one which moves away from the LEO (Low Earth Orbit) restrictions of the Space Shuttle, to exploring and setting up manned outposts throughout our solar system.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Hanley\u2019s NASA experience has seen his career take in a number of important fields within the agency, such as Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston \u2013 becoming flight director on two Hubble Space Telescope Servicing&nbsp;missions, before&nbsp;promotion to&nbsp;heading the Space Station Flight Director Office for two years. <\/p>\n<p>A year ago he became chief of flights, before his recent appointment to the current position of responsibility in helping humans return to the Moon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">While a large section of the media are hung up on NASA administrator Mike Griffin\u2019s soundbyte of calling the new Moon transit as \u2018Apollo on Steroids,\u2019 Hanley believes the CEV is hugely advanced \u2013 even three times larger&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;compared to the vehicle the likes of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong travelled in.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018Apollo\u2019s purpose was to send a man to the moon and return him safely to the earth,\u2019 Hanley said in an interview with The State Journal-Register in Illinois. \u2018We go a substantial step beyond that with this architecture in terms of the capacity to deliver large amounts of mass to the moon. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018That\u2019s really sending the signal that we\u2019re serious about exploration and serious about coming to stay.\u2019 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Utilising&nbsp;elements of the current US manned vehicle system, the Space Shuttle, the new era will see a dual launch approach to manned missions to the Moon, with the SDLV (Shuttle Derived Launch Vehicle) being the heavy lift of the&nbsp;lunar module, service module, plus optional cargo, linking up with the crew on the CEV in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018In NASA shorthand, we call it the 1.5-launch solution,\u2019 Hanley added. \u2018The big heavy booster brings the lunar module and the upper stage to orbit, and we\u2019ll follow it with the crew launch vehicle, which launches on a smaller rocket.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018(Using this system of separating the crew and cargo on ascent will make) the new launch system 10 times safer than the Space Shuttle. Mars is months away.
