{"id":42201,"date":"2005-12-26T19:11:21","date_gmt":"2005-12-26T11:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/moon-mars-mining-a-must-sevastiyanov\/"},"modified":"2005-12-26T19:11:21","modified_gmt":"2005-12-26T11:11:21","slug":"moon-mars-mining-a-must-sevastiyanov","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/moon-mars-mining-a-must-sevastiyanov\/","title":{"rendered":"Moon, Mars mining \u2018a must\u2019 \u2013 Sevastiyanov"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The president of RSC Energia, Nikolay Sevastiyanov, has spoken frankly about Russian ambitions on their unofficial version of the America\u2019s Vision for Space Exploration.   <\/p>\n<p>  The flamboyant \u2013 yet influential \u2013 president is under no illusions about the 2012-2014 timeline it would take for his company to support Russia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first manned mission to the Moon, including the mining of isotope helium-3 by 2020.<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As with the United States \u2013 the only problem is\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.money. <\/p>\n<p>As with the US, the total funding required to back \u2018as-soon-as-possible\u2019 exploration \u2013 and indeed exploitation \u2013 of the Moon and Mars is not guaranteed. With natural resources continually being diminished, the Moon has an abundance of helium-3 (He3) \u2013 which could be used as fuel in a new breed of Nuclear power stations.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018We must do this within the lifetime of our generation, first of all because of the limited nature of energy resources,\u2019 he added. \u2018One way or the other, but we will have to go beyond our planet in the search of new environmentally friendly power sources. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018A good candidate is isotope helium-3 to be used for nuclear power. It is available on the Moon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018The earth\u2019s reserves of helium-3 are so negligible that their industrial use is absolutely out of the question. According to some estimates, our natural satellite contains no less than 1 million tons of helium-3, which can fully meet the entire Earth\u2019s power demand for a period of more than 1000 years.\u2019 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Looking ahead, Russia also holds ambitions of a manned mission to Mars \u2013 with the parallel wish to set up a base for extended stays and exploitation of the Red Planet. While the Moon missions require Russian government funding, Sevastiyanov knows the Mars plans require an international effort. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">An expected alliance with an economically revitalised China could be the key for Russia \u2013 an alliance that is not only important to national goals, but for the planet as a whole. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018A mission to Mars is to be an international project (likely with China),\u2019 he noted. \u2018Mars is a potential new habitat for humans. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018The problem of closed space, which is what the Earth is for us now, will sooner or later lead to conflicts in the civilization\u2019s development. The manned space flight is needed to solve this problem.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The road map that these missions would lay down could then prove to be the foundations of future missions to the outer-reaches of the solar system, with Sevastiyanov noting for the first time ambitions to reach out towards planets that humans might not realise until 50 years time at the earliest. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018Besides, a mission to Mars will allow to develop advanced technologies which will make it possible to fly long-distance missions to the depth of the solar system, to energy resources of Jupiter and Uranus.\u2019<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The president of RSC Energia, Nikolay Sevastiyanov, has spoken frankly about Russian ambitions on their unofficial version of the America\u2019s Vision for Space Exploration.
