{"id":42237,"date":"2005-11-11T01:41:10","date_gmt":"2005-11-10T17:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/its-worth-the-risk-collins\/"},"modified":"2005-11-11T01:41:10","modified_gmt":"2005-11-10T17:41:10","slug":"its-worth-the-risk-collins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/its-worth-the-risk-collins\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s worth the risk \u2013 Collins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STS-114 Commander Eileen Collins has reiterated that the risks they take as astronauts are worth it, while noting the US must hold on to its leadership in space exploration, as a new space race builds up steam.  <\/p>\n<p>  Collins was speaking to an audience about their recent journey into orbit on Discovery at NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Alabama.\n<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The crew presented a 15 minute show of images taken during their 15 day mission to re-supply the International Space Station (ISS) and evaluate new processes in checking the Orbiter for damage from debris on ascent. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Problems with foam liberation from the External Tank (ET) put pay to NASA\u2019s ambitions to use the mission as a launch pad for the rest of the flight manifest, problems which are currently being solved with the help of MSFC ahead of next May\u2019s Return to Flight 3.<\/font><font face=\"Arial\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Foam loss from the ET during the ride uphill&nbsp;requires no explanation as to the risk it holds, with Collins commanding the first Shuttle mission since the loss of Columbia and her crew of seven during re-entry on STS-107. <\/p>\n<p>It was a chunk of foam striking the left wing of Columbia that caused a breach which allowed super-hot gasses to tear up the vehicle just minutes from home.<\/font><font face=\"Arial\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Still, former fighter pilot Collins isn\u2019t one to shy away from risk.<\/font><font face=\"Arial\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">\u2018This mission was worth the risk. Was it 100 percent safe?
