{"id":42308,"date":"2005-08-18T21:53:33","date_gmt":"2005-08-18T13:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/next-flight-march-2006-discovery\/"},"modified":"2005-08-18T21:53:33","modified_gmt":"2005-08-18T13:53:33","slug":"next-flight-march-2006-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/next-flight-march-2006-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Next flight: March, 2006 \u2013 Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA is set to announce that the next Shuttle launch will be no sooner than March 2006, with Discovery taking over from her sister Atlantis on STS-121.  <\/p>\n<p>  In a wide ranging review of the current status of the fleet, all External Tanks will be returned to the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) to have their PAL Ramps removed, re-sprayed and returned to KSC.<br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\">  <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\"><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It was an area on the PAL Ramp that liberated foam shortly after SRB Separation on assent that caused the ETs to be re-evaluated, post STS-114.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Although the area in question was a repair patch \u2013 leading to a probable reason for the shedding, other areas of the tank still failed to satisfy managers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/content.nasaspaceflight.com\/library\/1016\/15885_256.jpg\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\">&nbsp;(c) MAF<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">While there is no definitive information on the spraying process \u2013 this is understood to be based around a new process to help solve foam liberation in the areas of concern.<\/font><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Discovery will once again become NASA\u2019s Return To Flight Orbiter \u2013 given the period of time before the next launch. Atlantis was being processed for a September launch, but given \u2013 amongst other issues \u2013 the forward Reaction Control System (RCS) module must be pulled and the thrusters reworked, because the launch delay exceeded their certification dwell time, processing for STS-121 will be on Discovery.<\/font><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Discovery herself is set to fly back from Edwards Air force base in California at dawn local time on Friday.
