{"id":42339,"date":"2005-07-24T17:40:01","date_gmt":"2005-07-24T09:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/lockmart-lose-out-on-mars-contact\/"},"modified":"2005-07-24T17:40:01","modified_gmt":"2005-07-24T09:40:01","slug":"lockmart-lose-out-on-mars-contact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/lockmart-lose-out-on-mars-contact\/","title":{"rendered":"LockMart lose out on Mars contact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Belt-tightening at NASA has forced the space agency to cancel a planned $500 million Mars orbiter that was expected to be built by Lockheed Martin.   <\/p>\n<p>  Negotiations between the aerospace company and NASA had been expected to lead to the award of a design-and-build contract for the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter.<br \/>\n<font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">But the mission was canceled last week to cut costs, said Andy Dantzler, director of NASA\u2019s solar system division. <\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cIt\u2019s obviously a painful decision,\u201d Dantzler. \u201cWe canceled MTO because we simply don\u2019t have the money in the future budget to support it.\u201d <\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Dantzler said the decision is final. <\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The orbiter was to be the first craft in a network of Mars communications satellites. The spacecraft also would have tested techniques that will be needed to bring Mars rocks back to Earth. <\/font>  <\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The orbiter\u2019s design was based largely on the Reconnaissance Orbiter, which will be the largest and most sophisticated spacecraft to circle Mars.
