{"id":42368,"date":"2005-06-16T18:24:05","date_gmt":"2005-06-16T10:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/discovery-back-on-pad-launch-is-50-50%e2%80%b2\/"},"modified":"2005-06-16T18:24:05","modified_gmt":"2005-06-16T10:24:05","slug":"discovery-back-on-pad-launch-is-50-50%e2%80%b2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/discovery-back-on-pad-launch-is-50-50%e2%80%b2\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery back on pad \u2013 launch is \u201950\/50\u2032"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shuttle Discovery finally returned to the launch pad yesterday, but whether she\u2019ll launch in July is still in the balance.  <\/p>\n<p>  Growing concerns over Ice Debris led to two sources \u2013 one with NASA and the other with the United Space Alliance \u2013 both claiming the July window is \u201950\/50\u2032 \u2013 with NASA head Mike Griffin set to decide on June 30 if the launch is to be delayed until at least September.<br \/>\n<font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">  <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">It was the second time that Discovery had been rolled from the VAB to the Pad \u2013 the first time becoming only a short stay due to ECO sensor issues and the requirement to swap to a new External Tank that had been designated for Shuttle Atlantis.<\/font><\/font><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">ET-121 has new heater modifications on the feedline bellows \u2013 so as to reduce the risk of ice forming, ice that could break away and damage Discovery on assent. However, a new concern may yet be a show-stopper for NASA\u2019s return to Flight \u2013 that of ice, slush and frost build up on the LOX Feedline Brackets.<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">Since the story broke at the start of the week, NASA engineers have been working to a timetable to aim to resolve the issue to the point of certification in time for the July launch window. <\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">The schedule is as follows:<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <!--StartFragment --><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">Certification plan was on the timeline as the 13th of June. Baseline Schedule 14th.&nbsp; ICB 15th. PRCB Info Presentation Requirements for BIN 16th \u2013 with no word on if these have been met on time.<\/p>\n<p>Key dates on the timetable are: 90% FEC Engineering Review by the 21st of July. Delta DVR Review Presentation on the 24th and Stafford-Covey\u2019s final&nbsp;Return to Flight Task Group public meeting \u2013 announced today as to be held on the 27th of July.<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">The FRR (Flight Readiness Review is on the 29th, but Griffin takes the decision if&nbsp;to proceed on not with the July&nbsp;launch window on the 30th of July.<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">All eyes are currently on Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) where the current testing in their Hot Gas Facility is on-going. MSFC were only recently pushing for a third tanking test (the first to be performed with ET-121) \u2013 before United Space Alliance and Johnson Space Center officials managed to snuff out their request due to MSFC being unable to give full clarification on the requirement.<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">\u201cWe do know that Marshall SFC does have a habit of being \u2018over-cautious\u2019, as keeping their fingers in the proverbial pie justifies their existence,\u201d said one USA source \u2013 pointing to differing mentalities on the current status of Return to Flight.<\/font>  <font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font>  <font color=\"#0000ff\"><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font size=\"3\"><font color=\"#000000\">A further update on how testing is proceeding on the LOX Feedline Bracket modifications is expected in the next few days<\/font>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shuttle Discovery finally returned to the launch pad yesterday, but whether she\u2019ll launch in July is still in the balance.
