{"id":42379,"date":"2005-06-07T18:50:39","date_gmt":"2005-06-07T10:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/third-tanking-test-not-required-nasa\/"},"modified":"2005-06-07T18:50:39","modified_gmt":"2005-06-07T10:50:39","slug":"third-tanking-test-not-required-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/third-tanking-test-not-required-nasa\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Tanking Test not required \u2013 NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA managers have decided to rule out a third Tanking Test ahead of Shuttle Discovery\u2019s Return to Flight mission \u2013 STS-114 \u2013 leaving only the Debris Verification Review as the remaining issue.<br \/>\n<font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font face=\"arial\">  <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font face=\"arial\"><font size=\"1\">Tests carried out at the weekend by Marshall Space Flight Center on ET-120\u2019s LH2 Diffuser appears to have pin-pointed the cause of over-cycling of the LH2 pressurization relief valve \u2013 which was noted on the previous two Tanking Tests.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font face=\"arial\">  <\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">ET-121 \u2013 which will fly with Discovery \u2013 has the old single mesh Diffuser, thus procedure in the flow is currently back on for launch on July 13 \u2013 in a window that extends to July 31.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Five days of contingency time is available in the flow for any unexpected issues that may arise.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">A third tanking test would have seen a few days taken out of the launch window \u2013 but with this issue now resolved only the Debris concerns remain. Ice and Frost have been reported at length, although concerns of slush (possibly from melted ice from the new heaters on the ET) are gaining attention.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Slush has enough density to cause small cracks \u2013 should there be impact at supersonic velocity \u2013 in the Orbiter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Thermal Protection System, cracks which would prove to be highly dangerous to the Orbiter on re-entry.<\/font><\/p>\n<p>  <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><font face=\"arial\"><font size=\"1\">Stafford-Covey\u2019s Return to Flight Task Group \u2013 meeting on Wednesday \u2013 may touch on this subject.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NASA managers have decided to rule out a third Tanking Test ahead of Shuttle Discovery\u2019s Return to Flight mission \u2013 STS-114 \u2013 leaving only the Debris Verification Review as the remaining issue.
