{"id":42423,"date":"2005-04-06T17:54:59","date_gmt":"2005-04-06T09:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/debris-tracking-explained-by-nasa\/"},"modified":"2005-04-06T17:54:59","modified_gmt":"2005-04-06T09:54:59","slug":"debris-tracking-explained-by-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/debris-tracking-explained-by-nasa\/","title":{"rendered":"Debris tracking explained by NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA has announced a series of innovated solutions to the big question surrounding the agency\u2019s Return to Flight \u2013 how to stop the same mistake that saw the demise of Columbia happening to any of their three remaining Orbiters \u2014 by being aware of the problem.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">It was a chunk of insulation foam that struck Columbia\u2019s left wing not long after throttle up on STS-107\u2019s launch that punched a hole through the leading edge of the wing\u2019s Thermal Protection System \u2013 a breach that proved fatal when super-hot gases purged the inner cavity on re-entry \u2013 leading to the break up of the flagship high over Texas.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Radar and around 104&nbsp;cameras \u2013 including digital and high speed video systems, as well as airborne and space-based cameras&nbsp;\u2013 will cover all angles of the launch, to be reviewed on the ground to check for any debris striking the vehicle on its assent.
