{"id":45998,"date":"2023-08-11T20:58:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T12:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/russia-heads-back-to-the-moon-with-luna-25\/"},"modified":"2023-08-11T20:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T12:58:17","slug":"russia-heads-back-to-the-moon-with-luna-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/russia-heads-back-to-the-moon-with-luna-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia heads back to the Moon with Luna 25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s space agency successfully launched a robotic spacecraft Thursday on a journey to the Moon, the country\u2019s first lunar explorer since the Soviet Union\u2019s Luna 24 sample return mission in 1976.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">The Luna 25 mission lifted off from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, located in Russia\u2019s Far East, at 7:10 pm ET (23:10 UTC). Heading east, a Soyuz-2.1b rocket propelled Luna 25 through an overcast cloud deck and into the stratosphere, then shed its four first-stage boosters about two minutes into the flight. A core stage engine fired a few minutes longer, and the Soyuz rocket jettisoned its payload shroud.<\/p>\n<p>A third-stage engine fired next, then gave way to a Fregat upper-stage to place Luna 25 in orbit around Earth. The Fregat engine fired a second time to send the nearly 4,000-pound (1.8-metric ton) lunar probe on a roughly five-day trip toward the Moon. Russia\u2019s space agency, Roscosmos, declared the launch a success less than 90 minutes after liftoff, shortly after the Luna 25 spacecraft separated from the Fregat upper stage.<\/p>\n<p>This is historic for Russia\u2019s space program. Russia hasn\u2019t launched a lunar mission in nearly 50 years and hasn\u2019t had a mission successfully fly to any other planetary body since 1988, despite several attempts. Thursday\u2019s launch was a major moment for Luna 25, but its departure from Earth on a reliable and proven Soyuz rocket was not the riskiest part of the mission. That will come in a couple of weeks when Luna 25 begins its powered descent toward the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<h2>A big lift for a fading space power<\/h2>\n<p>Russia would like the Luna 25 mission to rekindle the country\u2019s once-stellar record in the realm of interplanetary exploration. Luna 24, the Soviet-era mission that was Russia\u2019s last probe to land on the Moon, returned lunar soil samples to Earth on a robotic spacecraft in August 1976, nearly four years after NASA\u2019s last Apollo landing with astronauts. That feat was not repeated until China\u2019s Chang\u2019e 5 sample return mission scooped up lunar soil and brought it back to Earth in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>,<\/p>\n<p>The Soviet Union was a pioneer in exploring the Solar System. The Luna 9 lunar lander achieved the first-ever controlled touchdown on another celestial body in 1966, three years before Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon on Apollo 11. While the Soviets lost the Space Race of the 1960s to the United States, Russian probes landed on the Moon seven times to deploy robot rovers and bring home samples.<\/p>\n<p>In 1970, the Soviet Union\u2019s Venera 7 spacecraft became the first mission to land on Venus. Phobos 2 entered orbit around Mars, but ground teams lost contact with the spacecraft as it approached its moon, Phobos. That was the last time a Russian spacecraft was so close to success on a voyage to another world.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 sent Russia\u2019s economy into a tailspin. Meager funding for the Russian space program went toward maintaining the Mir space station in low-Earth orbit and joining NASA to build the International Space Station, primarily with hardware and spare parts from Mir\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>The Russians launched two more shots at Mars in 1996 and 2011, but both failed to leave low-Earth orbit. Several European Mars missions have successfully launched on Russian rockets, but those relied on European technology to reach the red planet and operate there.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that leaders in the US space program view China, and not Russia, as the more serious contender to potentially beat NASA\u2019s Artemis program back to the Moon. Russia and the United States are inextricably linked together on the International Space Station, but they are going their separate ways on lunar missions.<\/p>\n<p>,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a space race with China,\u201d NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson wished Russia well on the Luna 25 mission, but said: \u201cI don\u2019t think that a lot of people, at this point, would say that Russia is actually ready to be landing cosmonauts on the Moon in the timeframe that we\u2019re talking about going to the Moon, or that possibly China would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia doesn\u2019t want to stop with Luna 25. There are plans for a Luna 26 orbiter mission, officially projected to launch in 2027, followed by two more ambitious robotic landing expeditions. But those launches are still years away, and given how long it took for Russia to ready Luna 25 for flight, it\u2019s probably a safe bet future Luna missions will be delayed more, if they fly at all.<\/p>\n<p>An agreement between Russia and China on robotic and eventual human lunar exploration in 2021 was seen by many as an initiative to potentially rival the US-led Artemis program. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Vostochny Cosmodrome, where Luna 25 launched on Thursday, and vowed to \u201cresume the lunar program\u201d abandoned by the Soviet Union in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>But talk of cooperation between China and Russia on the International Lunar Research Station has faded. China has invited other countries to join the Moon program, most recently Venezuela. And Russia\u2019s role in the Chinese lunar program was absent when China earlier this year unveiled its architecture for landing its astronauts on the Moon by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>A report released by the Center for Strategic &amp; International Studies last December found that the Russia-China partnership in space \u201cmay well be exaggerated,\u201d citing declining Russian space budgets, the drain on Russia\u2019s space program caused by the war in Ukraine, and persisting mistrust between the two countries.<\/p>\n<h2>Ins and outs of Luna 25<\/h2>\n<p>Luna 25 has gone through several stops, starts, and reiterations to reach the launch pad. First conceived in the 1990s, Luna 25 was burdened by chronic underfunding, delaying any meaningful work on the mission\u2019s hardware until the last decade or so.<\/p>\n<p>,<\/p>\n<p>Russia flirted with cooperation with Japan and India on the mission that became Luna 25, but those partnerships fizzled. Russia\u2019s space agency broadcast the launch live in partnership with RT, the state-controlled television network often used to air propaganda inflating Russia\u2019s stature. The broadcast included a live musical performance in front of a backdrop image of Yuri Gagarin, the first person to fly in space, but was limited in any news about the countdown or launch sequence.<\/p>\n<p>With the successful launch Thursday, Luna 25 is now climbing away from Earth, heading for an important maneuver on August 16 to enter orbit around the Moon. After several more maneuvers to adjust its path, Luna 25 will fire its descent engines for a braking burn to drop out of lunar orbit on August 21 and target a landing near Boguslavsky crater on the side of the Moon facing Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The target touchdown site for Luna 25 is at about 69.5 degrees latitude, closer to the Moon\u2019s south pole than any previous mission has landed. Luna 25 is outfitted with eight scientific instruments\u2014cameras, spectrometers, and radiation and dust monitors\u2014plus a robotic arm to scoop up soil specimens and deliver them to an on-board laser mass analyzer to measure the exact chemical composition of the material, including the fraction of water in each sample.<\/p>\n<p>Luna 25 also has a heating unit powered by radioactive plutonium-238 to keep the lander\u2019s insides protected against the extreme cold of each two-week lunar night. Russian officials say the spacecraft is designed to operate on the Moon\u2019s surface for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p>,<\/p>\n<h2>Racing to the south pole<\/h2>\n<p>The Moon is getting to be a busy place. China has landers operating on the near and far side of the Moon, and NASA\u2019s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been observing there for 14 years. In April, a Japanese commercial spacecraft narrowly missed making a successful landing.<\/p>\n<p>Now Luna 25 is on the way and is scheduled to land on the Moon just two days before India\u2019s Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft is due to make its descent on August 23. Chandrayaan 3, like Luna 25, aims to extend the frontier of lunar exploration closer to the Moon\u2019s south pole, targeting a landing site at about the same latitude. But SLIM won\u2019t be in position to attempt a landing on the Moon until about four to six months after launch.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a chance that two more landers could embark for the Moon by the end of the year, but their schedules aren\u2019t as certain. The first privately developed lunar landers from two US companies\u2014Astrobotic and Intuitive Machines\u2014could take off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in the next few months. Astrobotic\u2019s lander is pretty much ready to go, but it\u2019s waiting for ULA\u2019s new Vulcan rocket to be ready to carry it into space. The Moon craft developed by Intuitive Machines continues to go through pre-launch tests, while its ride to space\u2014SpaceX\u2019s Falcon 9\u2014could be ready to launch it as soon as the lander is available.<\/p>\n<p>Those US landers are vanguard missions for a NASA program to buy commercial delivery surfaces to the Moon for various scientific and tech demo experiments.
