In the demonstration, a non-3GPP satellite network connected with the 5G ecosystem while appearing fully 3GPP-compliant, due to the company\u2019s Interworking Gateway Function.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ST Engineering iDirect called it a demonstration of its hybrid 5G NTN (non-terrestrial network) strategy, showing that satellite operators can leverage the efficiencies of the 5G core while still using satellite-specific waveforms. This type of hybrid connectivity can be used until the satellite-optimized 5G New Radio (NR) waveform matures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to create a unified, interoperable satcom network that enables seamless roaming between terrestrial and non-terrestrial systems, allowing customers to protect their existing investments while transitioning to a scalable, next-generation 5G NTN network,\u201d said Sridhar Kuppanna, ST Engineering iDirect CTO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ST Engineering iDirect also said the proof-of-concept demonstrated inter-provider roaming, which allows operators to extend coverage to new regions and orbits.
