NBN Co <\/b>will offer a residential broadband service in Australia with Amazon<\/b>\u2019s Project Kuiper, under a new deal between the two companies announced Tuesday. <\/p>\n
NBN is a state-owned enterprise in Australia that operates a wholesale broadband network. NBN Co said it plans to offer wholesale residential-grade fixed Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband services to more than 300,000 premises in its existing satellite footprint via retail service providers. <\/p>\n
NBN Co plans to transition from its existing two Sky Muster satellites in Geostationary (GEO) to LEO. The company said LEO will be a \u201ccomplement\u201d to its investments in fiber and fixed wireless. <\/p>\n
NBN Co CEO Ellie Sweeney said this will bring higher speed broadband to Australians in rural and remote regions. <\/p>\n
\u201cAustralians deserve to have access to fast, effective broadband regardless of whether they live in a major city, on the outskirts of a country town or miles from their nearest neighbor. That\u2019s what nbn was set up to deliver. By upgrading to next generation LEO satellite broadband powered by Project Kuiper, we are working to bring the best available technology to Aussies in the bush,\u201d Sweeney said in a statement. <\/p>\n
The service with NBN is expected to go live when Kuiper launches service in Australia, \u201cin the middle of 2026,\u201d Amazon said. <\/p>\n
To this point, Amazon has deployed 78 satellites out of the planned 3,232 Kuiper satellites. This announcement comes as Amazon is set to launch the next batch of Kuiper satellites on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Aug. 7. <\/p>\n
