Quantum computing company IonQ<\/b> has completed its acquisition of Capella Space<\/b>, a move it said will support building a space-based satellite quantum key distribution (QKD) network. <\/p>\n
IonQ said the company will \u201cbegin developing a space-based QKD network by integrating Capella\u2019s satellite infrastructure with its quantum technology.\u201d IonQ, based in College Park, Maryland, announced the deal in May to Capella, a acquire synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery and analytics provider.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe integration of Capella\u2019s advanced space-based platform and proven constellation of deployed satellites \u2013 along with IonQ\u2019s quantum technologies \u2013 is expected to bolster commercial applications, global defense, and intelligence missions,\u201d CEO Niccolo de Masi said in a release. <\/p>\n
Capella customers and partners will not experience any disruption to their current work with Capella data and satellite solutions, a representative for Capella Space confirmed to Via Satellite<\/i> on Tuesday. \u201cThe company is committed to providing fast, reliable data to support their on-going missions,\u201d the representative said. <\/p>\n
IonQ added that Capella\u2019s customers will be able to access SAR remote sensing \u201cthrough the first quantum-enabled Earth observation platform.\u201d <\/p>\n
IonQ did not explain what the acquisition means for Capella\u2019s workforce. The Capella representative said team members are still working for Capella as of Tuesday, including CEO Frank Backes and the leadership team. <\/p>\n
