{"id":49087,"date":"2025-05-29T20:57:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T12:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/firefly-and-northrop-grummans-new-rocket-gets-a-name-and-50m-investment\/"},"modified":"2025-05-29T20:57:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T12:57:14","slug":"firefly-and-northrop-grummans-new-rocket-gets-a-name-and-50m-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/firefly-and-northrop-grummans-new-rocket-gets-a-name-and-50m-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefly and Northrop Grumman\u2019s New Rocket Gets a Name, and $50M Investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><b>Firefly Aerospace <\/b>and <b>Northrop Grumman<\/b> revealed the name of their co-developed rocket as Eclipse, alongside a $50 million investment by Northrop Grumman to advance production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The companies have been working together since 2022 to develop an American-built first-stage upgrade for Northrop Grumman\u2019s Antares 330 rocket and a new medium-lift launch vehicle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the companies announced that qualification testing is underway on Eclipse flight hardware, with more than 60 Miranda engine hot fire tests performed to date.<\/p>\n<p>Eclipse will first launch from Wallops Island, Virginia, \u201cas early as 2026,\u201d the companies said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The $50 million in funding is an expansion of Firefly\u2019s Series D funding round, which stood at $175 million last fall. Firefly extended the round given \u201cgrowing interest from both new and existing investors,\u201d and the company will have more to say on the total amount soon, a spokesperson for Firefly said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Firefly described Eclipse as \u201cfilling a void in an underserved market,\u201d and said it will support space station resupply, commercial spacecraft, national security missions and scientific payloads for both domestic and international markets.The medium-lift rocket is designed to deliver 16,300 kg of cargo to Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) or 3,200 kg of cargo to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).<\/p>\n<p>Firefly Aerospace CEO Jason Kim said in a statement that Eclipse will be a fit for the U.S. Space Force\u2019s National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Lane 1 and to launch proliferated constellations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEclipse represents two powerful forces coming together to transform the launch market with decades of flight heritage, a rapid, iterative approach, and bold innovation,\u201d Kim commented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Firefly will continue to offer its small-lift Alpha launch vehicle. Alpha suffered an anomaly in its most recent launch last month and lost the customer payload.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirefly is seeing growing demand for both small- and medium-lift launch services, so Eclipse will not replace Alpha but will instead supplement our Alpha rocket,\u201d the Firefly spokesperson confirmed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eclipse uses the same first stage Firefly is developing for Antares 330 and \u201cscaled-up versions\u201d of the propulsion systems and carbon composite structures from the Alpha rocket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEclipse builds from an evolution of both company\u2019s heritage products over several decades,\u201d said Kurt Eberly, director of Space Launch, Northrop Grumman. \u201cThat means we have the benefit of not starting from scratch. We\u2019re utilizing our existing engineering standards, quality, safety, and mission assurance processes to build Eclipse as the evolutionary successor to Antares and Alpha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eclipse is also designed for first stage reuse.
