Boeing<\/b> took $1.7 billion in charges in its Defense, Space & Security (BDS) segment in the fourth quarter of 2024 between multiple military aircraft programs and the Commercial Crew program for NASA<\/b>. <\/p>\n
Boeing reported fourth quarter 2024 results on Tuesday, after previewing the charges last week. Boeing reported $5.4 billion in revenue for BDS in Q4, down 20% compared to the same time last year. Loss from operations was $2.3 billion. <\/p>\n
BDS delivered two satellites during the quarter \u2014 two O3b mPOWER satellites to SES that launched in December. <\/p>\n
For the full year 2024, BDS reported $23.9 billion in revenue, down 4% year-over-year. Full-year loss from operations was $5.4 billion. <\/p>\n
Boeing continues to take charges on the NASA Commercial Crew program, including a $250 million charge in the third quarter. Management is working to improve margins in the BDS segment. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe acknowledge that these are disappointing results,\u201d CFO Brian West told investors on Tuesday. \u201cThese are complicated development programs and we remain focused on retiring risk each quarter, and ultimately delivering these mission critical capabilities to our customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also recognize impacts across satellites and a few other legacy platforms tied to development realities as we work to refresh the capabilities of these platforms to support our customer needs,\u201d West added. <\/p>\n
Backlog at BDS stands at $64 billion, with 29% representing orders from customers outside the U.S.<\/p>\n
