Recently, NSR estimated that the non-GEO share of total high-throughput capacity demand would grow from approximately 21 percent in 2022 to about 52 percent in 2032. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHardware, software, business models all of these are changing and being disrupted,\u201d said Kasaboski. \u201cThe main point to take away is that the number of non-established or non-traditional manufacturers impacting the market is increasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But speakers strongly agreed that GEO is not dead. <\/p>\n<p><script>var AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a6d75f78c070;googletag.cmd.push(function(){var AIMAP_29b58f13885ebf8ea6b032f958eb0748 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([992, 100], [[970, 90], [970, 250]]).addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_737ce075cc05dd766c8f8ea08f3faa73 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([1200, 100], [970, 250]).addSize([768, 100], [600, 300]).addSize([320, 100], [300, 250]).build();AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a6d75f78c070 = googletag.defineSlot('\/987\/satellitetoday.com\/via-satellite-digital-issue-ads', [ [600, 300], [300, 250], [970, 250] ], 'div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a6d75f78c071').defineSizeMapping(AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3).setCollapseEmptyDiv(true).addService(googletag.pubads());   });<\/script><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a6d75f78c071'); });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur business is split into two chunks to provide subsystems to Geosynchronous satellites and then provide satellites for LEO and MEO [Medium-Earth Orbit],\u201d said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. \u201cBut we absolutely believe that the sustainment of the GEO side is full steam ahead.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ryan Reid, president of Boeing Satellite Systems International, compared the impulse to ditch one orbit for another to someone who has a really nice house on the beach but abandons it for the mountains simply because more people are skiing now. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an \u2018and\u2019 solution between the lower cost access to space and the flexible technologies we have with digital payloads that allows solutions to come to bear in a more economical way,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen it comes down to it, GEO is the best way to get the economics of bandwidth, which at the end of the day is the constrained resource. So when it comes to an operator trying to drive economic value, it\u2019s hard to beat what you can do with GEO.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>However, Reid admitted that the use cases for GEO, including those that blend GEO with other orbits, are shifting.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely evolving,\u201d Reid said. \u201cIt\u2019s different than what it was in the past. It\u2019s absolutely in concert with other orbits.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Agreeing that there\u2019s a lot of opportunity for flexibility, Kasaboski pivoted to a more recent example of satellite\u2019s trend for non-GEO investment, SpaceX\u2019s investment in Starshield for government customers, asking: \u201cIs that a threat? Or is that an opportunity? Does it affect you at all?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Greenley suggested that the whole industry will benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt encourages not just a strong commercial market for constellations but a government market to pick up commercial services from constellations,\u201d said Greenley. \u201cI think that it drives a lot of volume of production in the market. But all the other constellations also create a large opportunity for manufacturing volume in the market. It\u2019s just that scale and then a different orbit. I think that\u2019s a great conversation to continue to push because I think that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do with our investments. We make investments in order to serve multiple customers and multiple missions and multiple orbits. This kind of kickstart offer reinforces the fact that using commercial capabilities to do all kinds of different missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to focusing on industry, speakers discussed where they are investing their resources based on what their customers want.<\/p>\n<p>Herv\u00e9 Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space, emphasized the need for more resilient technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we see also is a growing need for resilience and capacity to work hard environments,\u201d said Derrey. \u201cOur systems need to do very well in protecting against cyber threats, but also chemical threats. <\/p>\n<p>Alain Faure, executive vice president of Space Systems for Airbus Defence and Space, agreed, noting the company has taken the steps to roll out more flexible solutions to the market. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past year, we invested a lot to bring a new solution to a market, a larger satellite in GEO, with a flexible payload,\u201d said Faure. \u201cNow it\u2019s time to produce and deliver, to propose incremental steps to the market [and] to prepare for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several speakers noted that the timelines of bringing solutions to market have sped up, particularly mentioning the Space Development Agency\u2019s (SDA) impact as a government customer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SDA has shifted very significantly what it means to come to market \u2014 faster timelines, faster technology insertions. How do I get the capabilities up quickly?\u201d said Maxar\u2019s Johnson, referring to the SDA\u2019s flurry of contracts for commercial space and satellite organizations. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing it in other DoD space and intel programs as well that customers are looking for better value and quicker-turn technology.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Reid concurred: \u201cIt\u2019s not changing our approach but it\u2019s sharpening our focus,\u201d he said. \u201cThe market is telling us on the government side that we need to standardize our products to achieve the predictability at the rates and pace at
