{"id":51738,"date":"2024-02-29T00:39:48","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T16:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/nasa-and-russian-satellites-have-a-close-pass-in-orbit\/"},"modified":"2024-02-29T00:39:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T16:39:48","slug":"nasa-and-russian-satellites-have-a-close-pass-in-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/nasa-and-russian-satellites-have-a-close-pass-in-orbit\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA and Russian Satellites Have a Close Pass in Orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>A <b>NASA<\/b> satellite and a Russian satellite had a close pass in orbit on Wednesday morning, one that <b>LeoLabs <\/b>called \u201ctoo close for comfort.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NASA reported that the Department of Defense confirmed the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics Mission (TIMED) spacecraft and the Russian Cosmos 2221 satellite passed each other safely in orbit at about 1:34 a.m. EST on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the two non-maneuverable satellites will approach each other again, this was their closest pass in the current predicted orbit determinations, as they are gradually moving apart in altitude,\u201d NASA said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NASA satellite is operational and functioning, and the Russian satellite was not operational prior to the pass.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to space situational awareness firm LeoLabs, which tracks in-0rbit activity, the two satellites missed each other by less than 20 meters and had a 3% to 8% chance of collision.
