{"id":54475,"date":"2022-11-01T00:48:03","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T16:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/terran-orbital-receives-100m-lockheed-martin-investment-ends-plans-for-predasar-constellation\/"},"modified":"2022-11-01T00:48:03","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T16:48:03","slug":"terran-orbital-receives-100m-lockheed-martin-investment-ends-plans-for-predasar-constellation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/terran-orbital-receives-100m-lockheed-martin-investment-ends-plans-for-predasar-constellation\/","title":{"rendered":"Terran Orbital Receives $100M Lockheed Martin Investment, Ends Plans for PredaSAR Constellation"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Satellite designer and manufacturer&nbsp;<strong>Terran Orbital Corp.<\/strong>&nbsp;on Monday said it has received a $100 million investment from&nbsp;<strong>Lockheed Martin<\/strong> to allow the company to accelerate and expand its manufacturing capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin now owns 33.5% of Terran Orbital, which is supplying dozens of nanosatellite buses to Lockheed Martin for the Space Development Agency\u2019s (SDA) Transport Layer of mesh networking satellites.<\/p>\n<p>The two companies also have entered into a new strategic cooperative agreement through 2035 that allows Terran Orbital to pursue more opportunities through Lockheed Martin. The companies had a prior strategic agreement that ran into 2031.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded relationship with Lockheed Martin opens new doors for Terran Orbital and \u201cwe\u2019ll sort out what doors to go through,\u201d Marc Bell, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Terran Orbital, told&nbsp;<em>Defense Daily<\/em>. \u201cOur future just got brighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terran Orbital said in announcing the new investment and agreement that the companies will share expertise to advance technologies across military, commercial, and civil customers by focusing on mission assurance with satellites and constellation architectures, delivering innovative solutions quickly, on schedule, and affordably at scale.<\/p>\n<p>Terran Orbital went public earlier this year, not long after Russia launched its unprovoked war against Ukraine that is still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>The war was a \u201csea change\u201d moment for the commercial satellite imaging industry, demonstrating that there is not near enough synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capacity, Bell said. And by going public, Terran Orbital decided not to pursue its own constellation of SAR satellites and instead be a manufacturer of choice for commercial and government customers, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Terran Orbital said it will provide customers SAR satellites based on its PredaSAR product line. Given demand for SAR satellites and a five-year replacement cycle shows that focusing on satellites and related capabilities for customers is the right business model, Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>Bell said that private equity firm AE Industrial Partners\u2019 acquisition in early October of York Space Systems at a reported $1.1 billion enterprise value demonstrates that Terran Orbital is taking the right approach to the market, Bell said. Terran Orbital is a larger company and the York deal showed that \u201cwe are undervalued,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In its release, Terran Orbital said it can do more to meet the \u201cgrowing unmet needs in adjacent markets to the company\u2019s core satellite offering,\u201d including expanding its products and services to include SAR, electro-optical, hyperspectral, infrared and secure communication payloads, satellite subassemblies and components such as star trackers, reaction wheels, battery solutions, and guidance, navigation and control solutions, and mission operations using the company\u2019s and its partners\u2019 ground networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s market, customers want the industry to determine the leaders that will deliver timely, quality, and affordable solutions across a variety of missions,\u201d Bell said in a statement. \u201cThis is a continued expansion of our collaboration with Lockheed Martin, and complements and accelerates the decision Terran Orbital made amid the lingering supply chain crisis to continue to vertically integrate products and components to facilitate full in-house satellite and manufacturing production.
