PARIS \u2014 <\/i>Speedcast<\/b> signed a deal to offer SpaceX<\/b>\u2019s Starlink internet service to enterprise and maritime customers, the companies announced Tuesday during World Satellite Business Week in Paris. <\/p>\n
This is SpaceX\u2019s second public agreement with a satellite service provider for Starlink capacity, following Anuvu\u2019s announcement that Starlink will be integrated in its Maestro service for superyachts. <\/p>\n
Speedcast said it has been supporting customer trials of Starlink as an integrated service and cited oil rigs, merchant vessels, mine sites, and yachts as potential applications.<\/p>\n
James Trevelyan, senior vice president of Enterprise & Emerging Markets at Speedcast, told Via Satellite<\/i> that Speedcast has tested Starlink on land and at sea and the system performed as expected, calling the tests \u201cquite impressive.\u201d <\/p>\n
Trevelyan said the deal came about from customer demand, that Speedcast customers were asking for an integrated service. Speedcast customers will use Starlink\u2019s specialized enterprise and maritime terminals.<\/p>\n
He sees demand for LEO connectivity in Speedcast\u2019s key markets of cruise, maritime, and energy, but also for government applications. \u201cWe believe that there\u2019s quite a lot of appetite for these kinds of low-bandwidth applications everywhere. It\u2019s another tool in our toolbox,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
Speedcast emphasized the service provider is operator-agnostic, and the company has a similar deal with OneWeb signed earlier this year and is doing tests with OneWeb customers. <\/p>\n
Starlink has been known for its direct-to-consumer business model, but recently signed a deal with mobile carrier T-Mobile for direct-to-cell service with the second generation of the Starlink constellation. Just before this Speedcast announcement, Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX vice president of Starlink Sales, said Monday during a WSBW panel that he is working to drive more agreements with outside partners. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re excited to provide Starlink\u2019s high-speed, low-latency internet to Speedcast enterprise and maritime customers,\u201d said Jonathan Hofeller, Vice President of Starlink Sales at SpaceX said in the news release. \u201cThis significant leap in connectivity will open even more possibilities for companies to manage operations anywhere on Earth.<\/p>\n
The agreement also follows after Starlink debuted dedicated enterprise and maritime services with modified terminals and service plans, and recently announced a deal to provide internet service for all Royal Caribbean Group cruise lines \u2014 the first public cruise line adoption for Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services. <\/p>\n
Speedcast confirmed to Via Satellite<\/i> on Tuesday that Royal Caribbean Group maintains a multi-gigabit commitment with Speedcast. This agreement between Starlink and Speedcast is separate from Speedcast\u2019s relationship with Royal. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact that we\u2019re agnostic and we can integrate multiple solutions is a benefit to customers. We\u2019re finding that most enterprise customers don\u2019t want to be tied to a single closed network, but instead want access to all bandwidth sources, especially with the coming of LEOs and MEOs. They want to use a combination of frequencies and satellites for 100% uptime,\u201d said Alix Wright, Speedcast vice president of marketing and communications.<\/p>\n
Correction: This is the second Starlink service provider agreement, not the first.
