{"id":54750,"date":"2022-09-12T18:11:43","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T10:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/viasats-dankberg-calls-for-industry-wide-policy-discussions-on-direct-to-cell-service\/"},"modified":"2022-09-12T18:11:43","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T10:11:43","slug":"viasats-dankberg-calls-for-industry-wide-policy-discussions-on-direct-to-cell-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/viasats-dankberg-calls-for-industry-wide-policy-discussions-on-direct-to-cell-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Viasat\u2019s Dankberg Calls for Industry-Wide Policy Discussions on Direct-to-Cell Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><em>PARIS<\/em> \u2014 The satellite industry is facing opportunity and danger \u2014 danger in terms of regulations, Viasat CEO Mark Dankberg cautioned Monday during a fireside chat at World Satellite Business week in Paris.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the heels of announcements from T-Mobile and SpaceX, and Apple and Globalstar, about satellite direct-to-cell service, Dankberg said the satellite industry will need to make changes to its whole ecosystem including policy, regulations, and coordination agreements among operators to provide services to mobile devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that we\u2019re seeing is new entrants coming in and saying, \u2018We don\u2019t care about those old rules, we\u2019re going to do things differently and that\u2019s what\u2019s going to enable some of these services,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201c[But] it\u2019s not necessarily the orbit from which you offer those services, it\u2019s the environmental rules and the policies that go along with that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dankberg mentioned orbital carrying capacity, debris, equivalent power flux density (EPFD) and inline events as concerns that were once esoteric but are now more pressing. He also believes change should come from dialogue among existing operators about how to coordinate on spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>He cautioned that development in mobile and direct to satellite services could potentially block some countries out from the service, but did not give a specific example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to some of these new mobile and direct device services, countries for many reasons are talking about education, agriculture, climate change,\u201d Dankberg said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t have a dialogue on how to do that, and rules are changed, they may preclude countries from entering those markets.
