{"id":55049,"date":"2022-07-14T22:27:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T14:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/northrop-grumman-receives-contract-for-rapid-deployment-of-small-satellites\/"},"modified":"2022-07-14T22:27:07","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T14:27:07","slug":"northrop-grumman-receives-contract-for-rapid-deployment-of-small-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/northrop-grumman-receives-contract-for-rapid-deployment-of-small-satellites\/","title":{"rendered":"Northrop Grumman Receives Contract for Rapid Deployment of Small Satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northrop Grumman<\/strong> has won a sole source, $22 million cost-plus-fixed-fee undefinitized contract through February 2026 from <strong>U.S. Space Force<\/strong>\u2019s Space Systems Command for the Rapid On-orbit Space Technology Evaluation Ring (ROOSTER) effort, which is to provide low-cost and frequent deployment of small satellites to geostationary orbit for national security missions.<\/p>\n<p>The contract award said that ROOSTER is to be \u201ca multi-manifest rideshare satellite supporting operational and prototype missions in a geostationary orbit and maturing technology needed to conduct on-orbit refueling for future missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Space Force and Air Force Research Laboratory\u2019s ROOSTER program\u2013a so-called \u201cfreight train to space\u201d\u2013dates back to 2020 and stems from an earlier Long Duration Propulsive Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) (LDPE) undertaking. Orbital ATK, now part of Northrop Grumman, won the LDPE contract in 2017 to use the company\u2019s ESPAStar bus for adaptation onto any launch vehicle that met standard interface specification for EELV \u2014 now National Security Space Launch (NSSL).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLDPE and ROOSTER provide a low-cost, rapid, and flexible on-orbit capability to host and deploy numerous prototypes and payloads utilizing excess payload margin available on U.S. Space Force launch missions,\u201d according to the Department of the Air Force\u2019s fiscal 2023 budget request. \u201cEach LDPE\/ROOSTER on-orbit platform is currently designed to fly multiple payloads per mission, thus fully utilizing launch potential and providing the only recurring rideshare option for prototypes and experiments to geosynchronous orbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the Space Force\u2019s Space Test Program-3, a NSSL United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket launched the first LDPE (LDPE-1) on Dec. 7 last year.<\/p>\n<p>LDPE-1 carried a number of payloads, including the 50-pound Ascent CubeSat developed by&nbsp;Raytheon\u2018s Blue Canyon Technologies. Ascent is to evaluate the performance of commercial technologies in the near-geosynchronous space environment. AFRL\u2019s Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico said that Ascent is the lab\u2019s first to fly in Geosynchronous Orbit and that the latter poses environmental challenges not present in the low Earth orbit where most CubeSats have flown.<\/p>\n<p>LDPE will transition to the ROOSTER program after LDPE-2 and LDPE-3.<\/p>\n<p>Aerospace Corp., the El Segundo, Calif.-based, space-focused federally funded research and development center,&nbsp;said in December last year&nbsp;that \u201caround the year 2000, it became increasingly easy to make small, inexpensive satellites to rideshare into space as part of a larger satellite launch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"a97a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph la lb im lc b ld le jw lf lg lh jz li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt lu lv if gn\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cCompanies were dreaming of constellations of these smallsats, but the destination orbit was generally off,\u201d per Aerospace Corp. \u201cThe market responded by producing destination-specific rides on smaller launchers. Eventually, new and better onboard thrusters and space tug capabilities made repositioning a satellite in space a real option. These advances have led to renewed interest in ridesharing \u2014 companies offering more frequent launches to the right orbit at a good price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Space tug technology, such as LDPE and ROOSTER, \u201cis gaining real-world credibility and could be a significant factor in reshaping the smallsat rideshare market,\u201d per Aerospace Corp. \u201cSpace tugs provide last-mile \u2018taxi\u2019 services \u2014 placing small cargos in preferred custom orbits.
