{"id":57289,"date":"2021-06-14T21:22:34","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T13:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/g7-nations-make-pledge-on-sustainable-space\/"},"modified":"2021-06-14T21:22:34","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T13:22:34","slug":"g7-nations-make-pledge-on-sustainable-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/g7-nations-make-pledge-on-sustainable-space\/","title":{"rendered":"G7 Nations Make Pledge on Sustainable Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>The group of G7 nations has pledged to take action on space debris as part of the G7 Leaders\u2019 Summit in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Delegates from G7 nations \u2014 Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States \u2014 issued a joint statement on June 13, committing to \u201csafe and sustainable use of space\u201d and recognizing the \u201cgrowing hazard\u201d of space debris and in-orbit congestion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the orbit of our planet is a fragile and valuable environment that is becoming increasingly crowded, which all nations must act together to safeguard, we agree to strengthen our efforts to ensure the sustainable use of space for the benefit and in the interests of all countries,\u201d the statement reads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The statement calls for implementation of the <b>United Nation<\/b>\u2019s Long Term Sustainability Guidelines, a voluntary set of guidelines adopted in 2019. And it encourages collaboration through groups like the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the <b>International Organization for Standardization<\/b> and the <b>Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee<\/b>, to preserve the space environment for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Simonetta Di Pippo, director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs welcomed the statement and commented: \u201cThere is an urgent need to stabilize global space operations. We must future-proof activities now to deliver a safe, secure and sustainable space environment for tomorrow.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The commercial space industry applauded the move as well. Nobu Okada, CEO of <strong>Astroscale<\/strong>, which is working to commercialize in-orbit debris removal and in-orbit servicing, said the company looks forward to working with space-faring governments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday\u2019s G7 joint statement recognises the urgent need for debris removal and in-orbit servicing activities to protect our orbital environment as an international asset.
