The in-person event will take place at 3 p.m. PDT on Monday, March 31, at Naval Base San Diego in California.<\/p>\n<p>A team of NASA and Department of Defense personnel are at sea in the Pacific Ocean where splashdown will take place. The team currently is practicing the procedures it will use to recover the astronauts after their more than 600,000 mile journey from Earth and back on the first crewed mission under the Artemis campaign. A test version of Orion and other hardware also will be on-hand for media representatives to view.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget-layout related-content-also-read-box my-3\">\n<h4 class=\"mb-0\">Also Explore: All Space Missions List<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>Participants include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Liliana Villarreal<\/strong>, NASA\u2019s Artemis II landing and recovery director, Exploration Ground Systems Program, NASA\u2019s Kennedy Space Center in Florida<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capt. Andrew \u201cAndy\u201d Koy,<\/strong> commanding officer of USS Somerset (LPD 25), U.S. Navy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lt. Col. David Mahan<\/strong>, commander, U.S. Air Force\u2019s 1st Air Force, Detachment 3, Patrick Space Force Base, Florida<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Artemis II will be the first test flight of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket, Orion spacecraft, and supporting ground system with crew aboard. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen will venture around the Moon and back.
