Between January 1<sup>st<\/sup> 2020 and December 30<sup>th<\/sup> 2020, it had only sold one and was in danger of missing a key target. But on Dec 31, Airbus signed a two-satellite deal with <strong>Intelsat<\/strong>, hitting&nbsp;its target literally with hours to spare.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites will be based on the Airbus OneSat product line, the latest generation of fully flexible, in-orbit reconfigurable, software-defined satellites. The OneSat satellites are designed to deliver the optimal balance between performance, flexibility and competitive cost per bit. The two next generation satellites will be delivered in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites are likely to be launched in 2024, Jean-Marc Nasr, head of Airbus Space Systems, said conference call with journalists after the order was announced on Jan. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Nasr was confident about the state of the satellite market today. He said the number of Geostationary (GEO) satellite orders in 2020 didn\u2019t take a dip that could have been expected due to COVID. He said companies weren\u2019t questioning investments and pulling out, and the pipeline for satellite orders remained stable and robust. Nasr is also confident there will be more deals signed in 2021, and that the market is not going to take any kind of significant dip. \u201cMy impression is that the GEO market is not going to slow down,\u201d Nasr said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Airbus also signed a deal for a fully reconfigurable telecoms satellite from Australia\u2019s second largest telecommunications company and leading satellite operator <strong>Optus<\/strong>. The OneSat deal was Airbus\u2019s first contract from Optus. Airbus also signed a three OneSat satellite deal with <strong>Inmarsat<\/strong> in May 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Even though though these satellites ordered previously are a couple of years away from launching, Nasr expects Airbus to sign potentially another three OneSat orders in 2021, and said there is \u201creal traction\u2019 for the OneSat product range.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Spengler, Intelsat\u2019s CEO said in the release that Intelsat\u2019s investment in Airbus software-defined satellites \u201cmarks an important first step in evolving the world\u2019s largest, most resilient, integrated space and ground network.\u201d He also said this satellite will enable <strong>GoGo Commercial Aviation<\/strong> in-flight broadband services, and other managed services for Intelsat customers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, Airbus had the target of selling three of its new flexible OneSat satellites to customers around the world.
