There hasn\u2019t been really the need to innovate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, senior vice president of Government Policy and Strategy at Inmarsat Government, stressed the important role of organizations like hers in supporting the military in taking smarter risks. Inmarsat owns and operates a global portfolio of satellite networks.<\/p>\n<p><script>var AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a6d4d5b90f81;googletag.cmd.push(function(){var AIMAP_29b58f13885ebf8ea6b032f958eb0748 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([992, 100], [[970, 90], [970, 250]]).addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_737ce075cc05dd766c8f8ea08f3faa73 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([1200, 100], [970, 250]).addSize([768, 100], [600, 300]).addSize([320, 100], [300, 250]).build();AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a6d4d5b90f81 = googletag.defineSlot('\/987\/satellitetoday.com\/via-satellite-digital-issue-ads', [ [600, 300], [300, 250], [970, 250] ], 'div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a6d4d5b90f82').defineSizeMapping(AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3).setCollapseEmptyDiv(true).addService(googletag.pubads());   });<\/script><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a6d4d5b90f82'); });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the commercial industry is such a predominant player in space \u2026. it\u2019s important to appreciate what that means in terms of a new a new type of partnership between commercial and government,\u201d said we\u2019re advocating for funding and resources and talent for guiding a new military service \u2026 to develop and deploy and plan for space capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Cowen-Hirsch, key areas of interest for the mobility communications industry is how the U.S. government buys satellites communication services, as well as how the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) forges new and evolving partnerships with commercial and Allies will be informative of how business relationships will change as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Panelist Doug Schroeder, oversight executive for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, seemed to agree with concerns that military space activities are lagging behind commercial activities, while noting that there are more opportunities than ever for the right enterprises to have a role in shaping a more modern military space. <\/p>\n<p>Schroeder said that his agency is actively seeking white papers for technologies such as line-of-sight and laser that will help foster future communications. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working to ensure terrestrial and space networks are going to connect seamlessly,\u201d he said. \u201cOur technical leadership \u2026 may be as competent a [team] of experts as I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense, Stephen Kitay, pointed out several ways the U.S. government is fostering military space activities: In addition to launching and strengthening agencies devoted to space development \u2014 including the U.S. Space Force, U.S. Space Command, and the Space Development Agency \u2014 the FY 2020 budget earmarked $300 million for new technologies, and is working with international allies such as Japan to collaborate on defense projects. <\/p>\n<p>Kitay also highlighted ongoing reform activities at Space and Missile Systems Center and the Space Rapid Capabilities Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a process, an evolution, but I would say, there is change and change is happening,\u201d said Kitay. \u201cI agree we have more to do, but this is a start. We need to use these new organizations as a catalyst for new thinking. Because so much military information is classified, the DoD and other agencies face a difficult task of sharing just enough information to raise a flag, but not too much so as to compromise security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have clearly drunk the Kool-Aid,\u201d Cowen-Hirsch joked. \u201cSo, it is in our inherent interest to make sure we can protect [our assets] and continue to provide services globally to all of our customers\u2026 across a number of different environments, including contested environments. We need to continue to improve our partnerships and effective exchange of information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huminski said has helped to improving awareness of space and satellite\u2019s importance by talking about the role of satellite technology in influencing real-life decisions, from preparing for a tornado to meeting a potential love match on a dating app. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work to educate [Congress] but the problem is space is very far away,\u201d said Huminski. \u201cThere\u2019s also a declassification challenge around information.
