Blue Origin provided its first substantive update this week on the cause of the catastrophic loss of the New Glenn rocket and most of its launch pad infrastructure at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in May.<\/p>\n
The space company\u2019s chief executive, Dave Limp, said investigative work is continuing into the anomaly that happened during a hot-fire test of the rocket during the evening of May 28, 2026. He confirmed, for the first time, widespread speculation that the problem started in one of the rocket\u2019s seven BE-4 engines that power the vehicle\u2019s first stage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, which was later confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections,\u201d he said. \u201cExtensive component-level and engine hotfire tests have been conducted to understand the failure mode better and inform mitigations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Limp said the company\u2019s path forward is \u201cclear\u201d as it works toward returning the New Glenn rocket to flight before the end of this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re making small modifications to the valve that can be quickly retrofitted to existing engines,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re manufacturing the updated hardware, which will be ready by the end of this month. In parallel, we\u2019re working through the remaining fault tree analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n
This is a positive update, and the transparency is appreciated. However, it also seems clear from Limp\u2019s statement that the company has not yet identified the root cause of the issue.<\/p>\n
The update was published 10 weeks after the hot fire test anomaly, and in parallel Blue Origin has rapidly been working to clear debris around the sprawling Launch Complex 36-A site in Florida and starting to rebuild a launch tower. Multiple sources have said the company is operating with a sense of urgency and sparing little expense in its efforts to resume launching the heavy lift rocket.<\/p>\n

Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos has made it clear that he wants to see New Glenn flying before the end of the year. Tory Bruno, the president of national security for Blue Origin, indicated on the social media site X that the next flight of New Glenn could carry the company\u2019s \u201cBlue Ring\u201d spacecraft. \u201cShe\u2019s in final build now for a flight this year,\u201d Bruno said Wednesday of the spacecraft.<\/p>\n
Despite the progress in both understanding the cause of the failure and rebuilding the launch site, the end-of-the-year timeline still seems to be extremely ambitious.<\/p>\n
However, it is clear that Blue Origin, which historically has appeared sluggish and unfocused in its various efforts across the space ecosystem, is now laser-focused on getting New Glenn back into service. This is a new era for Blue Origin and suggests that Limp\u2019s hire to lead the company has led to a significant transformation. In other words, the long-slumbering giant in the US space industry may finally be waking up.<\/p>\n
And just in time. New Glenn is central to the company\u2019s future success, of course. But beyond this, it is essential to NASA\u2019s lunar ambitions to establish a Moon base and for the broader commercial space industry that is grappling with the difficulty of finding launch alternatives to the Falcon 9 rocket, which is increasingly difficult to procure for non-SpaceX missions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
