The new office is designed to help Canadian companies win international business by:

Identifying and advancing large-scale export opportunities;

Coordinating whole-of-government support;

Deploying senior officials for targeted advocacy when it can be decisive.

Sidhu also launched a Strategic Exports Advisory Council (SEAC), with space industry officials claiming two of its 14 seats: Telesat President and CEO Daniel Goldberg and MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley.

Timing is everything. While SEAC is primarily a tool for the Canadian firms already big enough to sell abroad, its creation comes largely in response to crumbling trade relations with the US.

The US declined to confirm the renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) on July 1.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s new 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods are set to go into effect August 19—a move some see as a tactic to gain leverage in the new trade negotiations.

Canada has also committed to doubling non-US exports by 2035.

Canadian capabilities: NordSpace launched its venture arm in February to invest in strategic partners while the main company builds a domestic launch capability. The company took an undisclosed stake in NVD, which joins Wyvern as the Ventures’ second portfolio bet.

The gap between building capability and selling it abroad is one that NordSpace is trying to fill with its new venture arm by adding private Canadian capital into a sector that relies heavily on government funding. The NVD investment targets the kind of Canadian-built, exportable hardware SEO exists to support.

The NVD deal will strengthen the strategic partnership between the two tech firms:

NVD will draw on NordSpace’s Hadfield-150 engine line, which was designed and built in Canada for its Tundra rockets, for precision defense systems.

The two companies will collaborate on hypersonics R&D through a University of Calgary-led, Department of National Defence-funded network aimed at building sovereign Canadian capability.

“We need more companies like NVD who are bold and unapologetic in their intentions to build very specifically missile technology and defense capabilities that are critical to Canada and its allies,” NordSpace CEO and founder Rahul Goel told Payload. “We’re hoping that our investment sends positive signals to institutional investors and government agencies that if smaller companies like NordSpace can work together and invest, then they can also play a larger role.”

The post NordSpace Funds NVD Amid Canada’s Export Push appeared first on Payload.

NordSpace Ventures—the strategic investment arm of Canadian launch startup NordSpace—announced an investment in North Vector Dynamics (NVD) this week, a Canadian defense tech company building full-spectrum sovereign missile capability. The investment landed the same week Ottawa launched its Strategic Exports Office (SEO) in an effort to boost the country’s international competitiveness in strategic sectors—including aerospace […]

[2

post-61644","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
