The stage measured 13.8 meters long and weighed 4,000 kg. While the incident poses no harm to any missions currently in orbit or on the surface, observers have framed it as a bellwether for the growing concern of spent stages and debris in cislunar space as human activity there increases.<\/p>\n<p>The stage struck the western lunar limb, close to the Einstein Crater on the Moon&#8217;s dayside, traveling at roughly 8,700 km\/h. Before impact, scientists estimated the collision would create a crater 20 to 27 meters in diameter and about 4 meters deep. No images of the collision itself were captured, but the resulting plume was observable with the right equipment. Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory&#8217;s Very Large Telescope in Chile provided spectroscopic data noting the presence of lithium and sodium kicked up from the impact. The dust dissipated within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Danuri, also known as the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, began observations about 30 minutes before the collision and, through orbit control, passed over the impact site multiple times across eight imaging sessions, according to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. KARI officials said the observations confirmed changes in the terrain around the impact site and traces of ejecta spread. The agency secured footage from before and after the collision, enabling analysis of the changes it caused. NASA plans follow-up observations with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in collaboration with KARI, and the Meteoroid Environments Office at Marshall Space Flight Center used ground-based telescopes to image the impact.<\/p>\n<p>The event illustrates a problem raised in a recent study by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, whose simulations on debris propagation showed that space junk posed a collision risk to future missions. A little over a month after that paper&#8217;s release, a piece of debris from a rocket illustrated the concern directly. While this is not the first time space debris has struck the Moon, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman indicated the risk of such impacts will increase as more launches are made. Isaacman noted that NASA planners are already concerned about safeguarding against meteoroid impacts, which are common, and said the increasing risk of debris striking the surface must also be considered before crewed missions become routine.<\/p>\n<p>NASA and KARI plan continued observations of the impact site, with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter set to conduct follow-up imaging alongside the Korean agency.
