The request comes as space operators move from theoretical planning to real-world combat support across multiple combatant commands.

Outgoing Chief of Space Operations General B. Chance Saltzman pointed to recent operations in which space units delivered target timing, orbital positioning, and electronic protection. During Operation Midnight Hammer, precision strikes against Iranian nuclear infrastructure in June 2025, Guardians executed real-time satellite constellation alignments to deliver GPS accuracy and electronic warfare protection for seven Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. In Operation Absolute Resolve in Venezuela, Space Force assets provided continuous tactical satellite communications, localized signal jammer suppression, and real-time ISR tracking.

The budget grows sharply from prior years. The Space Force recorded $29.0 billion in FY2024, $30.2 billion in FY2025, and $33.5 billion enacted in FY2026 before the $71 billion FY2027 request. The proposal accelerates a pivot away from legacy high-cost satellites toward resilient mesh networks in Low Earth Orbit and Medium Earth Orbit. A major funding driver is the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture and the Department of Defense’s Golden Dome initiative. Following the Space Systems Command’s April 25, 2026 award of $3.2 billion in contract framework agreements for Space-Based Interceptor development, the request allocates dedicated funding to scale early-warning missile tracking sensors and space-to-space defense interceptors designed to counter hypersonic glide vehicles.

The $71 billion proposal breaks down across five pillars. PWSA and tracking tranches receive $18.5 billion for LEO and MEO missile tracking. The Golden Dome initiative receives $12.2 billion for space-based interceptors. SATCOM and cyber protection receive $14.8 billion for jam-resistant tactical data, launch and ground operations receive $11.5 billion for rapid responsive launch, and research and development receives $14.0 billion for AI threat detection and next-generation technology. The request aligns with a 2040 roadmap that stresses rapid commercial procurement over multi-decade acquisition, aiming to reduce time-to-orbit for mission payloads from seven years to under 36 months through mass-produced, standardized satellite buses.

Saltzman described the deliberate synchronization behind orbital combat support. “If you think that you simply turn GPS on and navigate like you’re going to the store, that’s not how Midnight Hammer goes,” he said. “We’ve got to do this in a specific time. If you know all that and integrate, then you can backward-process it to make sure that the constellation is perfectly aligned to deliver accuracy. That synchronization is deliberate.”

The request reflects an accelerating orbital arms race involving anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital jammers, and directed-energy counter-space weapons deployed by strategic competitors. Protecting the global space economy, valued at $1.8 trillion, will require sustained capital investment to keep orbital infrastructure operational during geopolitical crises.

Congress is now evaluating the FY2027 defense authorization package, which will determine whether the funding request advances.

The proposed expansion reflects a transition from passive orbital surveillance and launch support toward managing active theater support roles in contested operational environments.
