There have already been hacks of aircraft and aviation-related systems, including In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) systems, data communications between pilots and ground-based controllers, and airline operations systems that in one case in Europe caused flight cancellations, Alan Pellegrini, president and CEO of <strong>Thales USA<\/strong>, said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_283362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-283362\" style=\"width: 184px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-283362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.satellitetoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Alan-Pellegrini_NEW_photoshop.jpg\" alt=\"Thales USA President and CEO Alan Pellegrini.\" width=\"184\" height=\"193\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-283362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thales USA President and CEO Alan Pellegrini. Photo: Thales<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to scare anybody but these things are happening,\u201d Pellegrini said at the Aero Club of Washington, D.C., monthly luncheon. \u201cAs the aircraft become connected, there are real hacks.\u201d Thales USA is part of France\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Thales Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The aviation industry has a strong foundation and culture of safety, Pellegrini said, adding that a culture of cyber security can be built on this foundation. He also pointed out that there are firewalls among the systems that are used to control the flight of aircraft and other communications and inflight entertainment systems. The safety features around the flight control systems are \u201crobust,\u201d he said, but there are shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will submit to you there are many specifications that we get for systems to put on aircraft that don\u2019t have well established security requirements and now we as a company, I know others do to, want to try and head that off and address them but I think as an industry we could collectively do more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The aviation industry can learn from the lessons learned and best practices applied by other private sector groups such as financial services and retail to combat cyber threats, Pellegrini said. \u201cAwareness is great, action is better,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we have good models to work on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pellegrini said he agrees that \u201ctoday\u201d the cockpit and flight control systems are \u201cvery well walled off.\u201d But, he cautioned, with the increasing data connectivity between aircraft and ground systems\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em>Read the full article on Via Satellite\u2019s sister publication Defense Daily &gt;&gt;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As commercial aircraft increasingly become connected to the larger Internet of Things (IOT), the potential for safety risks also rise, the head of Thales\u2019 business operations in the United States said on Wednesday.
