Here\u2019s a quick rundown of some of the most significant deals this year.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Marlink Absorbs Four Companies Back-to-Back<\/h3>\n<p>Beginning with <strong>Palantir<\/strong> in March, satcom provider <strong>Marlink <\/strong>completed a spree of acquisitions this year to expand its maritime footprint. The company absorbed <strong>Radio Holland\u2019s <\/strong>connectivity business in December, and also acquired both <strong>Livewire Connections<\/strong> and <strong>OmniAccess <\/strong>in hopes of cornering the superyacht market specifically.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Speedcast Closes Harris CapRock Deal<\/h3>\n<p>Although the two companies announced the deal in November 2016, <strong>Harris Corp.<\/strong> officially closed the sale of its <strong>CapRock Communications<\/strong> business to <strong>Speedcast <\/strong>in early January. The deal is the largest in Speedcast\u2019s history, valued at $425 million in total.&nbsp;The acquisition added a number of major cruise companies to Speedcast\u2019s portfolio, and opens opportunities for the company in oil and gas and other maritime verticals, according to&nbsp;<strong>Northern Sky Research<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(NSR) analyst Brad Grady.<\/p>\n<h3>3. MDA Acquires DigitalGlobe, Becomes Maxar Technologies<\/h3>\n<p>With vertical integration benefits top of mind, <strong>MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates<\/strong> (MDA) finalized its acquisition of Earth Observation (EO) company <strong>DigitalGlobe <\/strong>in October, and subsequently changed its name to<strong> Maxar Technologies<\/strong>. Planet Scoops Up Terra Bella<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Planet <\/strong>made great strides to expand its EO business this year, kicking off 2017 with the acquisition of <strong>Google<\/strong><strong>\u2018s<\/strong> <strong>Terra Bella <\/strong>business and SkySat constellation. As part of the deal, Google entered into a multi-year agreement to purchase Earth imaging data from Planet, which launched a number of its own additional satellites this year.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Northrop Grumman Acquires Orbital ATK<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Northrop Grumman<\/strong>, which is helping to develop <strong>NASA\u2019s<\/strong> James Webb Telescope, agreed in September to purchase <strong>Orbital ATK<\/strong> for a staggering $9.2 billion.
