In turn, collaboration will become especially important in coming years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity, stability, and resiliency are essential at Inmarsat, and I think you see that across the satellite industry,\u201d said Donna Bethea-Murphy, senior vice president of global regulatory at Inmarsat Global. \u201cWe see ourselves going into the internet of things; but the more we integrate the more vulnerabilities we see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy Tomaszewski, vice president of advanced programs at iDirect, said his organization has had to boost its risk-management efforts, and today employs multiple strategies, such as using third-parties to test networks, tasking a rapid-response team with addressing issues the moment they emerge, and enhanced monitoring. iDirect also uses Dark Web Forums to gather information, while relying on law enforcement to guide its actions.<\/p>\n<p><script>var AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a7051939eb90;googletag.cmd.push(function(){var AIMAP_29b58f13885ebf8ea6b032f958eb0748 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([992, 100], [[970, 90], [970, 250]]).addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_737ce075cc05dd766c8f8ea08f3faa73 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([768, 100], [728, 90]).addSize([320, 100], [320, 50]).build();var AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3 = googletag.sizeMapping().addSize([1200, 100], [970, 250]).addSize([768, 100], [600, 300]).addSize([320, 100], [300, 250]).build();AIAD_fcd45f981d570e35cee941b23edc69c7_6a7051939eb90 = googletag.defineSlot('\/987\/satellitetoday.com\/via-satellite-digital-issue-ads', [ [600, 300], [300, 250], [970, 250] ], 'div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a7051939eb91').defineSizeMapping(AIMAP_21fe3bcfb86a8660aba4e721ee9338f3).setCollapseEmptyDiv(true).addService(googletag.pubads());   });<\/script><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1774631144891- 0-6a7051939eb91'); });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Because threat actors appear \u201cup and down\u201d the supply chain, sharing information with partners is critical; when iDirect receives threats from actors such as nation-states, it publishes those to the technology community (so experts can analyze malware) with the intent of helping others. \u201cThe sharing of information is critical,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to communication up and down the supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Craig Miller, CTO of ViaSat\u2019s Government Systems Division, said his organization also takes a \u201cholistic approach\u201d to security, which enables rapid response to threats. \u201cWe have a wide arrange of customers on our network, which leads to a wide array of threats on our network,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Miller also noted that because customers\u2019 security needs and expectations may vary dramatically, the satellite industry is under pressure to offer even more innovative \u2014 and sometimes highly customized \u2014 approaches to managing security threats. To better address its customers\u2019 needs, ViaSat now uses a built-in threat-management system that allows for prompt incident reporting, and the collection and sharing of threat intelligence data. As a result, ViaSat is able to provide patches and fixes within a short time frame.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Hill, CTO of ITC Global, suggested that managing different customers with different needs and in-house expertise can be challenging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome [organizations] have security specification guidelines that are 60 pages long, while others don\u2019t have anything at all,\u201d said Hill. \u201cYet some of those 60-page guidelines don\u2019t have to do with satellites, so we have to fill in the blanks. You have a spectrum of clients with different requirements, commercial airlines with ISO standards, government customers with other standards \u2026 you have to employ mechanisms with all those needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it can be tricky to navigate conversations with organizations in different industries (e.g., mining, gas, maritime), because they just want their communications technology to work without having to adapt to security conversations, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome customers know nothing about internet security \u2014 they just want their email to work,\u201d said Hill, adding that when he first entered the satellite industry years ago, security concerns weren\u2019t top of mind. \u201cSo we have to bring the [security] conversation to them. So the skill set that\u2019s required has really evolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomaszewski agreed, noting that there isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all solution for all of iDirect\u2019s commercial customers. \u201cSome of the end customers are geologists who want to do their jobs,\u201d while others can articulate exactly what they want, he added.<\/p>\n<p>But when customers don\u2019t respond to your ideas for enhancing security, sometimes there\u2019s nothing you can do. Because many the organization\u2019s clients are in the Payment Card Industry (PCI), helping those organizations protect data, and adhere to PCI Compliance standards, is one of his chief concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been the main business driver for a lot of the security features we\u2019ve built,\u201d said Henning. Today, Hughes offers a suite of risk-management services, including cybersecurity monitoring, IDS\/IPS antivirus security, and content filtering, within its portfolio of products and services. When asked whether there are impediments for information sharing between one company and the next in terms of information sharing, Henning said he also favored an open approach, where satellite industry players are exchanging information they have so they can better defend their interests against hackers and other threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my perspective, I don\u2019t think there should be anything from an information security perspective that we should hold off,\u201d said Henning. \u201cAll of the security [solutions are] based on industry standards and government standards, and industry best practices. If you\u2019re following those, you\u2019re doing what should be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Bethea-Murphy, openly communicating about risks and solutions can help prevent attacks. Therefore, she supports an open-door atmosphere that encourages partners to participate in the process of discussing and adjusting policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur industry is responding to ensure stability [and] we do this with communications,\u201d said Bethea-Murphy. \u201cWe have to talk to one another on every level. We see the challenge of cybersecurity as a holistic approach.
