Intel<\/strong>, the world\u2019s largest semiconductor chipmaker, has signed an agreement with ST-Ericsson<\/strong> that extends Intel\u2019s investment in positioning technology. Under the agreement, Intel has acquired certain assets of the Global Navigation Satellite System business of ST-Ericsson.<\/p>\n

While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, ST-Ericsson, a semiconductor joint venture by STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, announced the sale of the assets and intellectual property rights associated with its mobile connectivity GNSS business.<\/p>\n

ST-Ericsson\u2019s GNSS team has a total of approximately 130 people in the U.K., Bangalore and Singapore, which will join Intel as part of the transaction. The staff will be integrated into the Mobile and Communications Group\u2019s Wireless Platform R&D (WPRD) organization.<\/p>\n

By selling its GNSS business, ST-Ericsson is seeking to pursue external options for its connectivity business. The transaction with Intel is expected to be completed in August.<\/p>\n
