{"id":81016,"date":"2013-05-22T19:29:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T11:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/hts-roundtable-addresses-industry-challenges-and-successes\/"},"modified":"2013-05-22T19:29:39","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T11:29:39","slug":"hts-roundtable-addresses-industry-challenges-and-successes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/hts-roundtable-addresses-industry-challenges-and-successes\/","title":{"rendered":"HTS Roundtable Addresses Industry Challenges and Successes"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"150\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"6\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" margin=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" hspace=\"0\" height=\"169\" align=\"right\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/Assets\/Image\/NSR_HTSRoundtable.jpeg\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<i>Chris Baugh, president NSR consulting at the HTS Roundtable organized by the Global VSAT Forum.<\/i><br \/>\nImage credit: Steve Schuster\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>[Satellite TODAY 05-22-13] As several industry leaders including <b>Intelsat<\/b>, <b>Hughes <\/b>and <b>O3b Networks<\/b> are in the process of launching new High Throughput Satellites (HTS), a specialized roundtable discussion on HTS began May 21 in Washington, D.C. <br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The event, organized by the Global VSAT Forum, featured several panelists who said HTS might have far reaching implications for the global market place.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;\u201cHTS affects every segment of the market from manufacturers building multi-spot frequency reuse satellites down to end users who are buying bandwidth, cruise lines, oil and gas companies,\u201d said Chris Baugh, president of <b>Northern Sky Research<\/b>. \u201cConsumers are buying a lot more bandwidth per site in a lot cheaper way.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But, he said, challenges still remain. \u201cHow do we get this [HTS technology] in the hands of the consumer?\u201d he asked.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One of the panelists, Arunas Slekys, who serves as vice president, corporate marketing and general manager for the Russia CIS Region of Hughes, said the U.S. government has been part of the solution.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;\u201cThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act finally allocated $100 million for broadband satellite,\u201d Slekys said.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What does this mean for industry leader\u2019s bottom line? According to Slekys, 70 percent of Hughes revenue is obtained from service. \u201cIt\u2019s now all about satellite operators,\u201d he said. And greater efficiency has allowed operating costs to decrease. Slekys said Hughes currently has 20 people serving 700,000 customers. \u201cBecause of network intelligence \u2026 we\u2019ve developed incredible technologies and availabilities\u201d while reducing costs and maintaining dependability, he said.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And, according to Slekys, the technology is reliable. \u201cWe are running networks at 99.9 percent, routinely,\u201d he said where as \u201cthe terrestrial guys are struggling\u201d to get to 96 percent reliability.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; In the wake of recent natural disasters on U.S. soil, satellite has become a viable solution for government, private sector and end users, Slekys said. Referencing a tornado on May 20 that killed dozens and wrecked havoc on electric grids and telecommunications in Oklahoma, Slekys pointed out that communications have been possible thanks to satellite technology. \u201cNot on wireless networks, not on terrestrial networks.
