[Satellite TODAY 10-08-12] Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX)<\/b> successfully launched its Dragon spacecraft aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral on the first official cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the launch company announced Oct 7.<\/p>\n
The CRS-1 mission involved the transport of materials to support investigations planned for the station\u2019s Expedition 33 crew, as well as crew supplies and space station hardware.
\n \u201cThe Dragon spacecraft is on its way to the International Space Station this morning and is performing nominally,\u201d SpaceX said in a company statement. \u201cApproximately one minute and 19 seconds into last night\u2019s launch, the Falcon 9 rocket detected an anomaly on one first stage engine. Initial data suggests that one of the rocket\u2019s nine Merlin engines, Engine 1, lost pressure suddenly and an engine shutdown command was issued immediately. We know the engine did not explode, because we continued to receive data from it. Our review indicates that the fairing that protects the engine from aerodynamic loads ruptured due to the engine pressure release, and that none of Falcon 9\u2019s other eight engines were impacted by this event.\u201d
\n The SpaceX CRS-1 mission marks the first of at least 12 SpaceX missions to the space station under the company\u2019s cargo resupply contract with NASA.
