It is estimated that the benefits of accurate and timely information related to commodity prices, farming techniques and weather have led to farmers making additional profits ranging from $100 to $4,000 per harvest”
Kaushal noted, however, that the market does present a challenge, as India’s rural service usage remains voice-focused, resulting in what could be seen as a poor business case for operators. “Adoption of these services remains low because of limited service awareness and operators’ focus on entertainment value-added services, which are of low utility and are available through alternative channels. Operators can address these issues by offering livelihood enhancement services in local languages, enabling easy service discovery — similar to one-key access to GPRS — and providing content customized to the needs of the rural population.”

Related Stories-

SkyVision CEO Not Excited by HD in Indonesia; Plans 3-D Launch in 2011 Satellite News September 30, 2010
[09-30-10] While India and China remain two of the largest pay-TV empires in the Asian region, Indonesia, with its population of 230 million people and low penetration, represents an untapped broadcasting opportunity for satellite…

Orbcomm Arranges Lease Deal with OHB for AIS Satellites Satellite News September 29, 2010
[09-29-10] Orbcomm, a two-way machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and automatic identification system (AIS) service specialist, awarded a contract to German manufacturer OHB System to build and launch two AIS-enabled…

Opinions on VSAT Market Strength Vary (Comsys 2010 Report Part 1) Satellite News September 17, 2010
[09-17-10] VSAT executives and analysts traded opinions on the strength and opportunities presented by the global VSAT market at Comsys VSAT 2010 event, displaying a wide variety of assessments on the industry s potential …

[10-05-10] India’s rural value-added services market could generate about $835 million for regional service providers in 2014, according global telecoms, media and IT adviser Analysys Mason. In an Oct. 4 report, Analysys Mason Principal Consultant Sourabh Kaushal said that if India’s mobile subscriber base continues to build off of its contributed 42 percent net […]

[2

post-86069","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
