EC President Jos\u00e9 Manuel Barroso named Kroes as part of a new set of commissioners, which will serve until October 2014. <br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kroes previously served as EC commissioner for competition policy and replaces Viviane Reding, who becomes EC commissioner for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship. <br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The new Commission must gain approval from the European Parliament before it takes office.
