Yet while everyone was looking up at the sky, another, less visible part of China\u2019s space strategy was quietly taking shape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"444\">June 2026, Wenchang, Hainan Province.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"446\" data-end=\"599\">A satellite super factory passed an expert acceptance review and was preparing to enter trial production. Its designed annual capacity: 1,000 satellites.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"735\">How extraordinary is that number? Over the past several decades, China has launched only a little more than 1,000 satellites in total.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"939\">China placed approximately 350 satellites into orbit throughout 2025. The combined annual output of every launch site in the country was equivalent to just four months of production at this one factory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1018\"><strong data-start=\"942\" data-end=\"1017\">Four months to match an entire year of satellite launches across China.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1044\">Has Hainan gone too far?<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"mj02xy\" data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1075\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1075\">01 Orbit Will Not Wait<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1146\">Why is China pursuing satellite production at such a remarkable pace?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1194\">The answer is not in Wenchang. It is in orbit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1484\">Located on the eastern coast of Hainan Island, Wenchang was once a quiet seaside town known for its coconut groves, ocean breezes and tropical scenery. After the Wenchang Space Launch Site was completed in 2014, rockets occasionally lifted off from the area, drawing crowds of spectators.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1575\">Few people expected the town to become a new center of China\u2019s commercial space industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1800\">China has planned two major satellite internet constellations. The Qianfan Constellation is expected to comprise 15,000 satellites, while the national Guowang satellite internet program is planned to include another 13,000.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"1906\">Together, the two constellations will require the deployment of approximately 28,000 satellites by 2035.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"2034\">At China\u2019s 2025 deployment rate of roughly 350 satellites per year, it would take 80 years to complete the two constellations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2088\">The problem is that orbital resources will not wait.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2417\">The International Telecommunication Union generally allocates orbital and frequency resources on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to deployment milestones. If an operator secures spectrum resources but fails to launch and operate its satellites within the required period, those rights may be withdrawn and reassigned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2419\" data-end=\"2460\"><strong data-start=\"2420\" data-end=\"2459\">No one can afford to wait 80 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2462\" data-end=\"2639\">Elon Musk\u2019s Starlink has already launched approximately 12,000 satellites. By comparison, the Qianfan Constellation and Guowang combined have fewer than 500 satellites in orbit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2738\">SpaceX launched more than 3,000 satellites last year alone\u2014over eight times China\u2019s annual total.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2865\">For the past two decades, one of the greatest concerns surrounding Chinese manufacturing has been excess production capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2983\">Today, however, the commercial space industry faces precisely the opposite problem: it may not have enough capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2985\" data-end=\"3084\">The problem is not that China cannot build satellites. It is that it cannot build them fast enough.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3133\">Why not simply construct more production lines?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3135\" data-end=\"3208\">Because traditional satellites were never manufactured on assembly lines.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3407\">Under the conventional commercial space model, developing a satellite from initial design verification to final delivery can take 18 months at the fastest and three to five years at the slower end.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3409\" data-end=\"3534\">Even if a company invested heavily in ten production lines, it might still manufacture only a few dozen satellites each year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3536\" data-end=\"3586\">The problem is not the number of production lines.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3588\" data-end=\"3625\">It is the manufacturing model itself.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"zo9wr5\" data-start=\"3627\" data-end=\"3666\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3630\" data-end=\"3666\">02 Building Satellites Like Cars<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3668\" data-end=\"3712\">How is a traditional satellite manufactured?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3714\" data-end=\"3890\">The satellite remains fixed at one workstation. Engineers specializing in structures, thermal control, electronics, software and other disciplines take turns working around it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3892\" data-end=\"4101\">Assembly, adjustment and testing are performed one step at a time. The process is not only lengthy but also extremely expensive, with the cost of a single satellite often reaching hundreds of millions of yuan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4103\" data-end=\"4202\">This stationary, island-style production model may be adequate when only one satellite is required.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4204\" data-end=\"4291\"><strong data-start=\"4205\" data-end=\"4290\">But building one satellite is manageable; building 1,000 this way is a nightmare.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4293\" data-end=\"4475\">As commercial space enters a period of explosive growth and constellation plans expand to tens of thousands of satellites, this manufacturing model is becoming completely unsuitable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4477\" data-end=\"4601\">Satellites must stop being treated like individually carved works of art. They must become standardized industrial products.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4603\" data-end=\"4668\">Elon Musk was the first to complete this transformation at scale.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4670\" data-end=\"4831\">He transferred Tesla\u2019s manufacturing principles to SpaceX: standardized components, modular designs, automated assembly and tightly controlled production cycles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4833\" data-end=\"4982\">Instead of developing a different design for each spacecraft, SpaceX can continuously manufacture thousands of satellites based on a common platform.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4984\" data-end=\"5123\">Starlink production lines can manufacture between six and ten satellites per day. Each satellite reportedly costs approximately US$500,000.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5125\" data-end=\"5261\">The money required to manufacture one conventional large satellite could therefore be enough to produce hundreds of Starlink satellites.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5263\" data-end=\"5295\">Musk proved one important point:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5351\"><strong data-start=\"5298\" data-end=\"5350\">Satellites can be manufactured like automobiles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5353\" data-end=\"5400\">China soon began its own pursuit of this model.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5402\" data-end=\"5518\">In 2021, Geespace and Geely jointly established China\u2019s first satellite super factory in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5520\" data-end=\"5704\">Geespace founder and CEO Wang Yang previously worked within China\u2019s traditional aerospace system. Of the company\u2019s 18 founding team members, 14 came from aerospace research institutes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5706\" data-end=\"5795\">They transferred Geely\u2019s pulsed automotive production system into the satellite workshop.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5706\" data-end=\"5795\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88586\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/The-Taizhou-Xingkong-Zhilian-Intelligent-AIT-Center.-Credit-Geely-Technology-Group.jpeg\" alt=\"The Taizhou Xingkong Zhilian Intelligent AIT Center. Credit: Geely Technology Group<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5885\" data-end=\"5914\">The results were significant.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5916\" data-end=\"6058\">The factory could roll out a satellite in 28 days, reduce manufacturing costs by 45% and achieve a designed annual capacity of 500 satellites.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6060\" data-end=\"6222\">GalaxySpace, manufacturers supporting Shanghai\u2019s G60 satellite internet industrial cluster and MinoSpace subsequently established their own intelligent factories.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6224\" data-end=\"6389\">GalaxySpace developed annual production capacity of between 100 and 150 satellites, while MinoSpace\u2019s Wuxi factory can manufacture more than 150 satellites per year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6391\" data-end=\"6576\">GalaxySpace founder Xu Ming once proposed an ambitious target: reducing the cost of a conventional low-Earth orbit satellite from hundreds of millions of yuan to the million-yuan level.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6578\" data-end=\"6630\">This would be more than a simple reduction in price.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6632\" data-end=\"6691\">It would represent a revolution in satellite manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6693\" data-end=\"6792\">Dong Guanghong, head of the Wenchang Satellite Super Factory, is now pushing this approach further.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6794\" data-end=\"7024\">This time, China\u2019s state-owned aerospace sector is directly involved. The factory was jointly funded by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the Wenchang local government, and it was built beside the launch site.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7026\" data-end=\"7155\">Dong comes from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation system. His colleagues describe him with one word: frugal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7157\" data-end=\"7328\">But Dong\u2019s frugality is not about saving money on a few screws. He is attempting to recalculate the economics of spaceflight through the logic of commercial manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7330\" data-end=\"7427\">In traditional aerospace engineering, the most important measure has always been mission success.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7429\" data-end=\"7496\">But <strong data-start=\"7434\" data-end=\"7495\">commercial space must first answer a question about cost.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7498\" data-end=\"7670\">Dong set himself a straightforward objective: turn satellites from luxury products into mass-produced industrial goods and reduce manufacturing costs by another 40% to 45%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7672\" data-end=\"7772\">To achieve that goal, his team began bringing together expertise from two very different industries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7774\" data-end=\"7897\">On one side were traditional aerospace engineers. On the other were specialists from the automotive manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7899\" data-end=\"7968\">Two fundamentally different cultures met on the same production line.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7970\" data-end=\"8096\">The team ultimately developed a pulsed manufacturing system in which satellites move from station to station like automobiles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8098\" data-end=\"8309\">Every workstation operates according to a fixed production rhythm, completing one manufacturing stage every four hours. If a single station takes too long, the schedule of the entire production line is affected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8311\" data-end=\"8376\">In the past, aerospace production cycles were measured in months.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8378\" data-end=\"8409\">Now they are measured in hours.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8411\" data-end=\"8569\">The final assembly cycle for an entire satellite has been reduced from one week to one day. At its fastest, the factory can produce a satellite in half a day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8571\" data-end=\"8624\">Overall efficiency has increased more than threefold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8626\" data-end=\"8725\">Dong also did something unusual to train the factory\u2019s first group of satellite production workers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8727\" data-end=\"8861\">He selected more than 30 students from educational institutions in Hainan and sent them to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin for training.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8863\" data-end=\"8940\">In the future, these young workers will operate the Wenchang production line.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8942\" data-end=\"9099\">When asked how he intended to develop their precision manufacturing skills, Dong offered a remarkably simple answer: copy one page of text by hand every day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9101\" data-end=\"9225\">It could be a page from <em data-start=\"9125\" data-end=\"9151\">Dream of the Red Chamber<\/em>, an English textbook, a basic electronics manual or almost anything else.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9227\" data-end=\"9361\">His reasoning was that a person capable of writing carefully and neatly would probably also be capable of tightening a screw properly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9363\" data-end=\"9504\">It may sound like a joke, but those who have spent years working in precision manufacturing understand that it reflects practical experience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9506\" data-end=\"9610\">Stable hands help produce a calm mind. The same is true for spacecraft completed in Shanghai and Wuxi.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10189\" data-end=\"10327\">Satellites are precision instruments. During a journey of several thousand kilometers, they may be transported by road, rail and aircraft.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10329\" data-end=\"10402\">Any vibration along the way could loosen or damage an internal component.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10404\" data-end=\"10622\">After arriving at the launch site, the satellite must be unpacked, retested and subjected to joint system checks. Engineers must confirm that everything is functioning normally before it can be installed on the rocket.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10624\" data-end=\"10689\">Transportation and repeated testing alone can take several weeks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10691\" data-end=\"10760\">Manufacturing happens in one place. Launching happens somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10762\" data-end=\"10877\">For years, this separation created an invisible barrier for commercial space companies\u2014one that no one could avoid.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10879\" data-end=\"10926\">Then came the Wenchang Satellite Super Factory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10928\" data-end=\"11059\">Wenchang placed the factory directly beside the launch site. Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Co. is responsible for its construction and operation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12566\" data-end=\"12711\">Led by Chairman Yang Tianliang, the company transformed a piece of undeveloped coastal land into a commercial space launch site in only 878 days.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12713\" data-end=\"12767\">The site is still increasing its operational capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12769\" data-end=\"12840\">It completed nine launches in 2025 and placed 92 satellites into orbit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12842\" data-end=\"12964\">Once all four planned launch pads become operational, the site\u2019s annual launch capacity is expected to exceed 60 missions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12966\" data-end=\"13100\">If each mission carries an average of 20 satellites, the launch site could theoretically place 1,200 satellites into orbit every year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13102\" data-end=\"13211\">That would closely match the Wenchang Satellite Super Factory\u2019s designed annual capacity of 1,000 satellites.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13213\" data-end=\"13274\">Wenchang\u2019s low latitude also provides an important advantage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13276\" data-end=\"13494\">Because it is relatively close to the equator, rockets launched from Wenchang can make better use of the Earth\u2019s rotational speed, potentially carrying heavier payloads and reaching their destinations more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13496\" data-end=\"13621\">For the same rocket, launching from Wenchang can offer advantages over launching from Jiuquan, depending on the target orbit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13623\" data-end=\"13667\">This advantage should not be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13669\" data-end=\"13874\">If more than 20,000 satellites must eventually be launched, carrying even a few more spacecraft on every mission could eliminate the need for many rocket launches over the course of the deployment program.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13876\" data-end=\"13973\">In the past, a satellite had to travel thousands of kilometers from production line to launchpad.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13975\" data-end=\"14029\">In Wenchang, it needs to travel only a few kilometers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14031\" data-end=\"14103\">What once took months could eventually be completed in a matter of days.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14105\" data-end=\"14147\">This is more than an improvement in speed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14149\" data-end=\"14183\">It is an entirely different model.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14185\" data-end=\"14233\">Even so, speed is all that Wenchang has secured.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14235\" data-end=\"14291\">Orbital deployment windows are still closing day by day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14293\" data-end=\"14335\"><strong data-start=\"14294\" data-end=\"14334\">The real countdown is far from over.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"fjeavu\" data-start=\"14337\" data-end=\"14379\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"14340\" data-end=\"14379\">04 The Global Launch Race Has Begun<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"14381\" data-end=\"14467\">Wenchang\u2019s real target has never been merely to surpass its own previous capabilities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14469\" data-end=\"14498\">It is trying to catch SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14500\" data-end=\"14627\">Elon Musk\u2019s Starlink has already launched approximately 12,000 satellites, with new spacecraft entering orbit almost every day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14629\" data-end=\"14716\">China\u2019s Qianfan Constellation and Guowang combined remain only a fraction of that size.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14718\" data-end=\"14757\">China does not have much time to spare.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14759\" data-end=\"14830\">That is why the Wenchang Satellite Super Factory decided to move first.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14832\" data-end=\"14901\">Traditionally, companies waited for orders before building factories.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14903\" data-end=\"15002\">Wenchang reversed the sequence. To secure a critical deployment window, it built the factory first.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15004\" data-end=\"15140\">During the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, the satellite super factory entered a crucial phase of production-line integration and testing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15142\" data-end=\"15221\">An engineer identified in reports as Xiaohua led a team from Beijing to Hainan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15223\" data-end=\"15390\">He had previously participated in the construction of China\u2019s first pulsed satellite production line.
