The milestone came on only the German company\u2019s second flight, following a failed debut in March 2025 and months of delays.<\/p>\n<p>The mission, \u201cOnward and Upward,\u201d launched at 20:12 UTC, or 10:12 p.m. local time. A little over seven minutes later, Spectrum reached an initial elliptical orbit estimated at 180 kilometers at its lowest point and 500 kilometers at its highest. Its upper stage subsequently completed a circularization burn and released the satellites. Isar announced successful deployment about two hours after liftoff.<\/p>\n<p>The achievement establishes an orbital launch capability from Western Europe itself. The geographic distinction matters: Russia\u2019s Plesetsk Cosmodrome, in the European part of that country, has conducted orbital launches for decades. Spectrum\u2019s success therefore marks a first for Western European launch geography, rather than the beginning of European orbital spaceflight.<\/p>\n<h2>Second flight completes the path to satellite deployment<\/h2>\n<p>Spectrum\u2019s qualification mission demonstrated the sequence required to deliver customer spacecraft: passage through maximum aerodynamic pressure, first-stage engine shutdown, stage separation, upper-stage ignition, payload fairing release, orbital insertion and satellite deployment.<\/p>\n<p>Isar said it was working with customers to confirm satellite status following separation. Deployment completes the launcher\u2019s delivery task; spacecraft health and commissioning require subsequent checks by their operators.<\/p>\n<p>The mission carried TU Berlin\u2019s CyBEEsat, the University of Maribor\u2019s TriSat-S, EnduroSat\u2019s Platform 6, NTNU\u2019s FramSat-1 and the TU Wien Space Team\u2019s SpaceTeamSat1. A sixth payload, Dcubed\u2019s Let It Go experiment, remained attached to the upper stage.<\/p>\n<p>The payloads were selected through the German Space Agency at DLR\u2019s Microlauncher Competition, funded through the European Space Agency\u2019s Boost! program. The flight combined launch-vehicle qualification with access to orbit for university and commercial payloads.<\/p>\n<p>Spectrum is a two-stage rocket measuring 28 meters long and 2 meters in diameter. Its propulsion system burns liquid oxygen and propane, with nine Aquila engines powering the first stage and one powering the second. Isar advertises payload capacity of up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit or 700 kilograms to sun-synchronous orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The upper-stage engine can ignite more than once. An investigation completed within two months identified an unintended vent-valve opening and loss of attitude control at the start of the roll maneuver as the initiating events.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to flight involved further setbacks. A pressurization-valve issue halted the January 21, 2026, launch attempt. Strong winds delayed opportunities in March, and an unauthorized boat entering the maritime danger area disrupted the March 25 countdown.<\/p>\n<p>A leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel stopped an April 9 attempt. Isar stood down again on June 15 after detecting abnormal behavior in the vehicle\u2019s fluid systems.<\/p>\n<p>Before the September launch, the company completed component replacements and acceptance testing, followed by stage tests and a wet dress rehearsal. The successful flight therefore followed both corrections informed by the debut failure and additional ground testing during the second launch campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is to turn the orbital breakthrough into a repeatable service for small and medium-sized satellites. Isar said Spectrum vehicles 3\u20137 are already in production, while its new 40,000-square-meter facility near Munich is intended eventually to support manufacturing of up to 40 rockets annually. That figure represents planned production capacity, rather than an achieved launch rate.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also constructing a launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, to serve mid- and high-inclination orbits.
