The startup plans to launch its first radar demonstrator aboard a SpaceX Transporter rideshare mission in October, an initial step toward providing satellite operators with better information on small objects that threaten spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Greek venture capital fund Uni.Fund II led the funding round, whose exact value was not disclosed. Project-S said the investment is supplemented by non-dilutive support from the German government and public innovation programmes linked to the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The company is developing compact active radar sensors for deployment in space, supported by software that it describes as an AI-enabled orbital intelligence system. Its intended functions include modelling object trajectories, assessing collision risks and giving satellite operators information to support avoidance decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Project-S has highlighted debris between 1 and 10 centimetres across as a particular concern. Objects in this range can cause catastrophic damage, yet obtaining sufficiently reliable tracking information remains difficult. Chief executive Leonidas Askianakis said the company\u2019s objective is to help operators understand smaller threats and make better decisions as space activity expands.<\/p>\n<p>ESA\u2019s debris statistics, updated July 31, distinguish the estimated orbital population from objects routinely tracked. The agency lists approximately 46,760 catalogued objects, while its statistical model estimates 54,000 objects larger than 10 centimetres, 1.2 million debris objects between 1 and 10 centimetres, and 140 million between 1 millimetre and 1 centimetre. These modelled populations illustrate how much of the debris environment remains outside routine tracking catalogues.<\/p>\n<p>The technical challenge extends beyond detecting an object once. For collision avoidance, observations must support a sufficiently useful estimate of its trajectory and future proximity to an operational spacecraft. That makes the connection between sensor measurements and Project-S\u2019s proposed risk-assessment software central to the concept.<\/p>\n<p>Small debris is not entirely beyond ground-based radar capability. ESA describes experiments with Germany\u2019s Tracking and Imaging Radar that can detect objects approximately 2 centimetres across at a range of 1,000 kilometres and derive coarse orbital information. Using the Effelsberg radio telescope as a separate receiver improves sensitivity toward 1-centimetre objects. Such measurements demonstrate the distinction between detecting small fragments during observation campaigns and maintaining the tracking information required for operational warnings.<\/p>\n<p>For Project-S, the October flight is therefore a technology demonstration toward a broader service. Its operational value will depend on whether the radar observations and accompanying software can produce useful information for satellite operators.
